Using electricity RimWorld Guide
Last update: 19 August 2016
You need electricity to run most of the more advance devices in the game. To produce it, you will need the right power plant, batteries to store the energy, and wires to provide electricity to the colony.
Objects that generate electricity
Certain devices in RimWorld will require electricity to work properly. To obtain it, use one of the following methods:
- Solar power plant - effective when placed on areas of high solar irradiance. They don't take too much space but you will need quite a lot of them to maintain a steady flow of energy.
- Wind farm - takes a lot of space but is able to produce a lot of energy. Make sure that there aren't any trees or objects near around that would block their work.
- Wood burning power plant - produces a lot of energy and is fueled by wood.
- Geothermal power plant - available only when you discover a certain technology by the research table. Produces tremendous amount of energy, but needs to be placed on a special geyser.
Storing energy
Use one of the rooms to build a couple (at the beginning you won't need more) of batteries. Select wires and use them to combine the batteries with the power plant. From now on, the excess of produced energy will be stored in the batteries. This will support many devices e.g. during the night when solar power plants will not work.
How to supply devices with electricity?
It's very simple. All you need to do, is to select a wire, combine it with a generator/battery, and drag it near devices that require electricity. You can also include some switches that will allow you to turn off several devices at once.
