General hints RimWorld Guide
Last update: 09 August 2016
If you are a beginner Rimworld player, select a classic scenario with three colonists. Match their qualities, so that they complement each other. At first, you will own plentiful resources and you can develop your colony without hindrance.
Your selection of the AI Storyteller is material for the later stages of the game. Select Phoebe and Free Game mode thanks to which you can play without any worries and learn game basics.
While selecting the map of the world in which your colonists will set camp, it is a good idea to select a mountainous area - drilling tunnels and rooms into the mountains will cut down your metal consumption.
Save the game very often - in case of a failure or a cataclysm, load saved game. Many of the events are randomly generated.
Take care of each one of the colonists, because this means a faster rate of development of the colony and more tasks that can be performed during the day.
Rely on cultivation of soil and invest in various crops. Potatoes are the basic crop - they grow fast and save your colonists from starvation.
Spend some time on selecting our colonists and determination of their qualities. Many of the qualities will make the game harder for you (e.g. inability to perform simple tasks), whereas others will speed up the development of your colony.
As soon as you learn the basics of the game, it is a good idea to advance to a higher difficulty level. Rimworld uses a unique system of Storytellers that ensure interesting stories and the course of the action.
Use the pause frequently and plan your next steps. In the architecture mode, you can also select the planning option and define construction plans for your colony.
The key issue is to ensure shelter and food for your colonists. Set this as your first priority. Depending on the difficulty level and on the Storyteller, you will initially own some supplies that will allow you to survive for the next several days. Use that time wisely, because soon random events will start to take place.
When you map out an area for storage, make sure it is enclosed in walls and roofed. Many of the items and food are perishable and can quickly go off without proper conservation.
While hunting for animals, or attacking others, you can select between melee weapon and firearm. Both of them are effective, but it is a good idea to rely on ranged attacks, because injuries take long to heal and they can leave permanent defects. While attacking with firearm, you are less likely to suffer from counterattack.
When it comes to food, a good idea is to temporary pick berry bushes. Also, you can dispatch your hunters on hunting (pick the weaker animals, thanks to which the colonist will not be killed), but remember that you need a butcher's table to obtain meat. Ensure abundance of edible crops and store food for future - you can turn them into paste or add them as an ingredient, to higher-quality foods.
In the work tab, select manual priority. The lower a given number, the higher the priority of a given work. In the first place, colonists take to the performance of works with higher priority. By default, colonists will perform tasks they have the knack for - it is a good idea to make sure, at the beginning that each one of them is a builder or a miner, which will speed up the development of the colony.
On the other hand, in the commands tab, it is a good idea to pick the option that makes the colonists fight, instead of running away from danger (the crossed swords icon).
If necessary, recruit a given colonist for military service. You can command him to attack the attacker, or simply have him move into a safe area.
Do not lose your spirits! Rimworld can be difficult at times, and even unfair - if a given colony fails to survive, start a new game. Each game is unique and will allow you to discover new elements that abound here.
