You can select any of the fields as your starting area. After you click on a field, the you will receive information on that area on the left. You will learn about the temperature, precipitations, climate, type of rocks, etc. Also, you should note how often you can cultivate the soil. Each of the climates has its advantages and disadvantages. An interesting option is to pick a mountainous area as your starting location. You can drill tunnels and chambers into mountains, thanks to which you can save up plenty of metal. Apart from that, mountains are easy to secure against attacks from the outside. For starters, it is best to pick area around moderate forests/mountains - this will allow you to grow crops and build shelter in the mountains. Also, this will shelter you from unfavorable temperatures and rain.
