After you select a new colony, you can select one of three game modes

After you select your colony, the game will offer three scenarios:

  • Crashlanded - this is the classic, default, game mode. Here, you start off with three colonists that you can pick yourself. You start the game with plenty of supplies and you will have access to firearms. You will also be accompanied by an animal companion and on the map, you will be able to retrieve the rest of supplies from your ship. This is the best mode for beginners.
  • The Rich Explorer - This scenario assumes that a single colonist has crash-landed on a planet. You start the game with abundance of supplies and powerful weapons. From the very beginning, you will have access to technology that will allow you to build defense cannons. However, this mode is more demanding than the previous one, because the qualities of the remaining colonists are randomly generated.
  • Lost Tribe - This scenario is interesting in that instead of a members of a colony, your colonists are tribe members. You start the game with five inhabitants of the planet and available resources are scanty. From the very beginning, you will have to obtain food, but you will be aided by three animal companions. It is better to pick this scenario after you have already gained experience with the game.

After you have selected the scenario, you will have to make another important choice - you have to pick your AI Storyteller. The Storyteller is responsible for the pace of the game, the rate at which random events occur and their difficulty. You can pick one of three:

  • Cassandra Classic - This is your default Storyteller, who will ensure more and more difficult tasks for you. The beginning of the game is quite relaxed, but with time, it will get increasingly more difficult. However, it should be noted that the tasks will be scaled to your skills. Cassandra will not be bent on destroying your colony and her goal will be to put you to the test over and over again.
  • Phoebe Chillax - With Phoebe, the game is a regular story of colonists who build a new home for themselves. The pace of the game is incredibly slow and it does not surprise you with, virtually, any threats. This is the best mode for beginners who do not want to struggle against fate adversities and simply want to build their colony. Remember however that with Phoebe, you will not experience the best the game has to offer - the prickles of excitement and the uncertainty of the next day.
  • Randy Random - Randy is a unique Storyteller. Stories and events generated by him have nothing to do with the abilities of your colonists. The only thing he cares about is the fast paced and diverse gameplay. He is a madman, which makes him the most interesting Storyteller of all, because he provides the most riveting of stories. However, you have to prepare yourself for a difficult game, especially as a beginner. However, it is Randy with whom you can build the most extensive colonies and fight the greatest battles.
After you select your AI Storyteller, you can still define additional parameters of the game - Game modes - Key information - RimWorld Game Guide

Additionally to your AI Storyteller you can pick an additional option:

  • Free game - This is a typical sandbox mode, where you can enjoy building your colony and restrict random events to a minimum.
  • Basebuilder - This mode is similar to the free game one, but it presents the player with a bit more challenging tasks.
  • Rough - This mode lacks any additional parameters that would affect bonuses to colonists' mental state, etc. Apart from that, random events become dangerous and more demanding here.
  • Challenge - The name speaks for itself. The game becomes a challenge at this point. Apart from skills, you also have to rely on luck and your brains, to build a prosperous colony.
  • Extreme - This is the ultimate and the most difficult game mode. Bad mental state will be prevalent among your colonists, the opponents will be strong and rewards and, pods will provide scarce resources.
  • Permadeath - This is an additional option, which leaves you with only one game save slot. The game saves only at the moment of leaving the game.
