Important starting tips for Pathway Pathway guide, tips
Last update: 18 April 2019
This chapter contains numerous tips for Pathway. To make navigation easier, we have divided the tips into various categories. We recommend checking every tip before you start playing the game for the first time - you are sure to find something here that you didn't know!
General tips
Below you can find the list of general tips and those useful during fights in Pathway. Read them carefully before you start playing the game:
- Knife is the most powerful weapon in the game - it deals massive damage, doesn't require ammo to work, and can be used with a special attack that causes Bleed. While bleeding, a character loses about 10 HP per turn [this health loss happens at the beginning of the enemy's turn, before they make any actions]. Also, knives have high critical damage. Usually, an attack done with a knife means immediate kill. Characters with high Agility should be equipped with this weapon [not everyone can carry a knife!]. These units move around the map a lot [many characters can use a knife right from the beginning or they can learn it after gaining enough levels]. Sadly, knives also have a disadvantage: it is rather useless against undead (zombie can counter your attack, Infected explode upon death dealing damage to characters standing near them).
- Check the achievements and try to unlock them - besides new badges, achievements give you rewards related to the particular achievement. You can claim them at any moment through the Journal. Open it, go to the achievements tab, find the unlocked achievement and press Claim.
- If one of your characters has an ability that improves healing with medkits or armor repair, remember to select them in inventory screen before you use a given item.
Combat
This part of the chapter contains tips and advice on the combat:
- Remember, you have limited amount of ammo. If one of your characters runs out of ammo, that person will have to fight with a melee weapon (e.g. a knife) or with bare fists.
- Don't heal your characters or repair their armor if you are looking for a Tent. It allows you to heal and repair the armor of your party for free. You can open the inventory screen even when the event dialog window is active.
- The enemy units have a certain mechanic: they tend to run away when they get surrounded (flanked). In Pathway, flanking doesn't give you any bonuses.
- They are used frequently by enemy units with support abilities (e.g. High Priestess - revival, zombie - regeneration by eating corpses, Nazi Medic - healing yourself and others, Nazi Officer - an order that grants additional move). If you get closer to any of these units, there is a high chance that they will start running away and using abilities instead of attacking you (especially when they are weakened).
- Press Tab key and move the cursor on an enemy. You will see a red area informing you about that enemy's range of fire. Press and hold Tab to see how much movement range a given enemy has. Add up both information to see if you are safe in the place you are currently standing.
- Hide a lot: the best tactic is to perform surprise attacks. You can't see enemies when you are hiding behind a wall and you can't attack them. However, if another character from your party sees the enemy, the one hidden behind the wall will be able to perform a surprise attack. Don't rely on this method too much - the AI remembers the direction in which you went and can "foresee" your current location.
- Remember to perform every move - it is possible that you will sometimes forget to reload a character's weapon (this move costs 1 action point).
- Press the skull icon at the bottom of the screen to check how many enemies you have left (you can also check their type - provided that you saw them at least once).
Equipment
Your starting equipment and items you collect during a mission have a huge impact on your adventure. Manage your items wisely and you will get a significant advantage.
- Your jeep should store a lot of various items: spare clothes or weapons can be useful. Change armor instead of repairing the one you wear right now; if you need ammo, open the inventory and use the one with full clip.
- For your first mission, you should take the most important items; don't take everything with you - choose only the most useful items (e.g. medkits or repair kits, weapons or spare clothes of the same category).
- If you want to get rid of some weapons or clothes, move them to the "valuables" tab. Press RMB on an item and select "Move to valuables" - they will be sold. However, you get money after you visit the merchant and give him your valuables, or after you end an expedition. Armors and weapons that are worth less than $300 should be moved to that section (provided you don't plan on using them). These items are common (usually, their strength/durability is comparable to your starting gear).
- When you are moving to the Tent (one of the locations on the map) to regenerate health and armor, be sure that your characters are wearing the most durable pieces of armor (provided you have a few different types in the inventory). If you don't do that, you will repair a worse armor instead of the better one.
- Remember to have a few empty slots in your inventory - some random events can reward you with a few valuable items, especially those events marked with a question mark. You can also get items by completing missions.
