PS5 With Best Debut in PlayStation's History
The launch of PS5 was a great success. The device recorded a better debut than any previous PlayStation family console.
- The launch of PS5 outshined the results of all previous consoles in this family,
- Additional units of the PS5 are expected to go into stores later this year.
Sony's CEO has reasons to be pleased. The company has just boasted that the PS5 scored the best debut of any PlayStation console. Unfortunately, no specific figures have been disclosed and the company limited itself to stating that demand for the device is unprecedented. PS4 has sold 7 million units in the period between its launch in November 2013 and April 2014 and the company is confident that its latest device will outperform this result.
Currently, PlayStation 5 is virtually impossible to get, as the supply was sold out. Sony has announced that new shipments will be delivered to stores before the end of the year.
Unfortunately, the company's announcement is so laconic that it is not entirely clear whether the promised additional consoles are the ones that are currently being delivered to American stores (including Walmart and Best Buy for Black Friday), or whether Sony is planning further deliveries this year.
The success of PlayStation 5 is all the more impressive as the console is only sold over the Internet because of the coronavirus. Moreover, the pandemic has also caused delays in factories. This shows how starved the players waiting for next-gen were.
Let us recall that the PS5 debuted in the USA and a few selected countries on November 12. In Europe, the console went on sale a week later, on November 19. It is worth noting that the problems with the availability of the device are partly the fault of scalpers who bought thousands of PlayStation 5s and now auction them off at scandalous prices.
