Notch defied people's vote and won't make Minecraft 2. At least not in the first place
The spiritual heir to Minecraft from the game's original creator won't be created. Notch conveyed that he will focus on a roguelike project.
Minecraft fans, who jumped for joy after the recent announcement, were brought back down to earth just as quickly. The original developer of the game, Markus "Notch" Persson, stated that he doesn't intend to create a spiritual successor for now. Instead, he will focus on his project from roguelike genre.
Democracy has lost
A few days ago, Notch set up a poll on X, allowing his community to vote on one of two games that he will later develop. One of the options was Minecraft 2, and it won by an overwhelming majority of votes (currently it is 81.5% to 18.5%). Soon after, Notch made an online post where he "essentially announced Minecraft 2," highlighting that it would merely be a spiritual successor to the game.
However, it turns out that the developer gave fans false hope, and democracy didn't prevail in this case. Yesterday, Notch published a new post in which he announced that he intends to create a roguelike titled Levers and Chests.
Talked to the fellas at the office. Looks like we're making Levers and Chests!
Tipping point was PC Gamer saying it seemed interesting, lol. Yeah I still love PC Gamer.
In one of the comments, Notch said that Levers and Chests will be a "turn-based old school roguelike, presented in the format of an old school first person party-based dungeon crawler." He even posted the first screenshot from the game.
When asked why he didn't listen to the fans and acted contrary to the poll results, he replied that the "spiritual successor [of Minecraft] would be way less fun than the dungeon roguelike." He described this type of game as a "sad and nostalgic landfill," which he had already pointed out during the earlier "announcement" of Minecraft 2. Nonetheless, it is possible that there may be changes in this matter in the future.
