Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1 Launches; Classic MGS With Keyboard Support on PC
This morning saw the release of Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 1. Contrary to earlier statements, it is possible to play on the keyboard on PC.
Metal Gear Solid: Master Collection Vol. 1, a set containing Metal Gear, Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake, Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, along with bonus materials, has been released.
- The bundle debuts simultaneously on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S.
- The PC edition can be purchased on Steam. Console versions are available on PlayStation Store, Microsoft Store, and eShop for $59.99.
- The games included in the collection can also be purchased separately.
There have already been many visual comparisons and tests before the release, so we have a good idea of how the collection looks in technical terms.
It is also worth mentioning the modes in which Metal Gear Solid Collection Vol. 1 runs on individual platforms:
Platform: | Resolution: | Frame rate: |
PC, PS4, PS5, XSX/S | 1080p | 60 fps |
Switch (TV mode) | 1080p | 30 fps |
Switch (portable mode) | 720p | 30 fps |
The question of control on PC
The collection is generating a lot of excitement especially on PC, because two of the games in the set (Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater) are debuting on PC with this bundle. Many gamers were disappointed to hear about the lack of mouse and keyboard support, but it turns out that Konami eventually managed to partially fix this.
All of the games in the set can be played with a keyboard, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater additionally offers partial support for mouse control. However, the developers warn that the best experience is provided by playing with a controller.
Patch on the way
In less positive news, Konami has admitted that the collection has some technical problems, which will only be fixed with a patch some time in the future. The plan is to fix, among other things, slowdowns in cutscenes in Metal Gear Solid 1-3 (the situation is worst in MGS2) and incorrectly displayed subtitles in bonus materials for Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2 in the NES console version. New graphics options will also be added to the first two installments of the series.
PC hardware requirements
Finally, it is worth mentioning the system requirements of the games included in the collection.
For the first (chronologically) four games in the collection, the requirements are the same. Most likely, however, these are not exact figures, as it's hard to imagine that the 8-bit installments in the series require as powerful hardware as MGS2. A slightly more powerful PC is needed to run Metal Gear Solid 3.
