On this page of our guide to Humankind you'll learn about strategic resources. You will learn how to use them. These are special types of raw materials, the amount of which is limited on the map.
Strategic resources are a special type of resources, without which it is impossible to train and produce modern military units. They are also necessary for the construction of certain infrastructure and special projects. Keep in mind that some entities need more than access to a single deposit of a given strategic resource. Although you will know the locations of strategic resources after discovering deposits, it will remain unknown until the development of the appropriate technology.
Like luxury resources, you must build an extractor on the field with a deposit of this resource to enjoy its benefits. This can be done in the territory belonging to the city or the outpost. In the latter case, you should buy the extractor for points of influence, which is sometimes a better solution (the extractor is created immediately).
Some emblematic districts and infrastructure projects benefit from such resources in the vicinity and offer additional production points. For example, Australians can build a special mining complex (emblematic district), which offers 50 points of production for the city, for each neighboring deposit of strategic resources.
Below is a list of strategic assets and examples of units that require these assets:
- Horses - this resource is used by all cavalry units, that is: scouts, horsemen, Knights, hussars, etc.
- Copper - it is essential for ancient units such as spears, chariots or war elephants, but also for later units such as mortars.
- Iron - from the Middle Ages to modern times. Every unit of knights, musketeers, artillery, ships and tanks requires this resource. It is one of the most versatile strategic resources, to which almost 1/4 of the land units in the game and most modern units require access to this resource.
- Salpetre - early units using firearms, i.e.: musketeers, dragoons, howitzers, etc.
- Coal - this resource is more needed for some infrastructure improvements in cities than for the production of units. Only steam frigates and ironclads will need this resource.
- Oil - all mobile units, that is, ships and aircraft require access to this resource. If you play on the sea map, getting this resource is a priority.
- Aluminum - this is the most important raw material when it comes to the construction of the most modern and advanced combat units: helicopters, fighters, strategic bombers and aircraft carriers.
- Uranium - it is also essential for the production of advanced units (including modern battle tanks, nuclear submarines and missile cruisers) and for the production of nuclear weapons.
Strategic resources can be traded in the same way as luxurious resources. Players must pay a certain amount of funds, trade routes are created, and the buyer receives copies of this resource. The seller does not lose such resource in any way.
