Humankind: Expansion - connecting, liberating, destroying cities Humankind guide, tips

On this page of the Humankind game guide, we have provided tips on expanding cities by merging, liberating and destroying them.

Last update: 19 May 2022

This page of our Humankind guide describes the expansion of your cities by combining them as well as destroying or liberating them, which, contrary to appearances, can be very helpful.

Connecting cities

Connecting cities is a very helpful but expensive option. With this action, you can combine two cities into one. The connected cities are counted as one, and this is an irreversible process. This is an extremely useful option when you are approaching the maximum limit of cities. It is worth connecting small cities to avoid high connection costs.

First, the military architecture technology must be developed. This option is only possible for two adjacent cities, but it does not have to be territories from the city center. In addition, you need to take into account the high cost of absorbing the city - every territory, infrastructure of the city and districts are counted. To do this, you need points of influence.

Connecting cities has its advantages - huge increase in income from districts and fields around all parts of the city and much larger percentage bonuses. In addition, all the infrastructure bonuses extend to the entire area of the newly connected city. However, there are also disadvantages. In addition to the high costs, expect a huge decline in stability and reduced population growth. The game scales all bonuses and penalties, therefore, the more you have districts and population, the greater the demand will such a huge city have. In addition, the siege of the city will block production and reduce income. Try to destroy the besieging troops as soon as possible and prevent the enemy from conducting a long siege. Usually such a city will be the main pillar of your empire. Therefore, when planning for expansion, it is necessary to maintain a balance between the number of small and large cities.

Liberating cities

Sometimes you will not be able to afford to connect cities or have trouble with maintaining the city (eg. because of the greater influence of a different civilization). This is where the option to Liberate City comes in handy. This action is available from the first era and can be applied to any city that is not the capital.

The liberation option is available in the city menu on the right. After selecting this option, the city becomes independent and passes into the hands of the residents. From now on, you can establish diplomatic relations with any minor faction. The liberated city works in the same way as the other cities belonging to independent people on the map. Nothing prevents you to re-annex or simply conquer such a city. This is a good way to score points and earn a military star by destroying military units.

Destroying cities

Sometimes, neither the reunification of the city nor the liberation will be a good solution. It may happen that destroying the city will be the best option. Such an action only results in the removal of the city, but the territory still remains under your control.

The destruction of cities is possible through pillaging with the help of any army. The larger the army with a large combat strength, the faster the process. The destruction of the administrative center will cause the importance of the city, but all other districts will remain intact. From now on, the territory will become neutral and it will be possible to occupy it through the construction of a new outpost.

Sometimes, this is an extremely useful solution, although the city loses all infrastructure improvements and population points. Rebuilding a city or taking territory can be cheaper than conquering and occupying a city. The occupied city can become your property only after the signing of the peace treaty. The destruction of the city solves this problem, because you can simply build a new one, to which no one will claim the right.

Another way is bombing aircraft or artillery shelling of land or sea units. This process takes several turns, but the enemy city not only disappears from the map, but also the city walls are destroyed. The fastest and most effective (albeit expensive) way is to use nuclear weapons. A nuclear missile destroys not only the administrative center, but also other districts and units in the area.
