Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag

The fourth major installment in a bestselling TPP action-adventure game series. The game was developed by Ubisoft Montreal in cooperation with other Ubisoft’s inner studios. The main story in Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag is set in 18th century. You meet a pirate captain Edward Kenway (the grandfather of Connor Kenway from Assassin's Creed III), who gets entangled in the age-long conflict between The Brotherhood of Assassins and the Order of Templars. Interwoven in the story are authentic places and historical events, as well as famous figures (including Edward Teach, Benjamin Hornigold, and Anne Bonny) related to the so called Golden Age of Piracy. The sandbox gameplay model offers the players the complete freedom of exploration and undertaking various missions. Complimentary to the solo mode, the game features an expansive multiplayer with a number of diverse maps and playable characters.

A continuation to a 2009 action RPG. Risen 2: Dark Waters is the work of Piranha Bytes, a German studio that gained substantial popularity through their Gothic series. The game is set 10 years after the events of the first installment. The Nameless Hero is approached by Patty, the daughter of Steelbeard; the girl ask for help in her pursuit of a powerful artifact. Meanwhile, the Inquisition tasks the hero with infiltrating a pirate gang on the island of Puerto Sacarico. As befits a typical action-RPG production, the fun in Risen 2: Dark Waters consists mainly of exploration, questing, and dispatching enemies. Compared with the preceding title, significant changes were introduced in the combat mechanics, and a more attractive audiovisuals were provided.
LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game

Another installment in the popular arcade action games series by the British studio Traveller’s Tales that re-imagines famous pop culture universes as LEGO bricks. This time around, it is the Pirates of the Caribbean movie saga. Plot-wise, LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean: The Video Game covers themes from four movies dealing with the adventures of captain Jack Sparrow, starting with The Curse of the Black Pearl and ending with On Stranger Tides. The well-known events are presented with a light sense of humor that is typical of the series. In the title, around 70 characters with various skills make an appearance, including Jack Sparrow, Will Turner, and Elizabeth Swann. There are also more than 20 levels full of arcade sequences (platformer levels, combat) and simple logic puzzles. Each stage is focused on certain events from the movie original and enriched with cinematic cut-scenes. One of the novelties of this installment is the possibility of visiting one location multiple times in search of additional treasures. LEGO Pirates of the Caribbean can be played either solo or in cooperation mode with another player on a split-screen.

An expansion for the second installment of the action RPG series by Reality Pump, a Polish development studio. Two Worlds II: Pirates of The Flying Fortress offers a new campaign that takes place in a previously uncharted area. The plot of the add-on is focused on a pirate captain and his crew who are confined on a cursed archipelago. The player helps the corsair save his beloved, find the legendary treasure, and suppress a mutiny on his ship. Of course, the story is non-linear, concluding with one of three endings. Gameplay-wise, the expansion introduces changes in the alchemy system, enables the player to steer a boat, adds new kinds of weapons and enemies, including powerful bosses, such as a Basilisk or a Stone Golem, who require the player to conduct a research on their weaknesses in order to defeat them. Apart from the single player campaign, Pirates of the Flying Fortress offers four new multiplayer maps for the Adventure mode. Moreover, the add-on slightly improves the graphics and introduces new, dynamic weather effects.

One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is another installment of the third-person action game series that mixes the mechanics from the cult Japanese hack-and-slash Dynasty Warriors with the world of the popular One Piece manga. The game was developed by Omega Force and published by Bandai Namco Entertainment. The protagonist of One Piece: Pirate Warriors 3 is a pirate named Luffy whose biggest dream is to become the Pirate King. To achieve that, he has to gather a group of swashbucklers similar to himself and face the enemies that stand in the way of his dream coming true. Story Mode is made of a series of missions during which Luffy visits many places and meets characters known from the original manga. Like in every proper hack-and-slash, combat is the game's primary objective. We take part in epic battles with tons of enemies during which we use various cold steel weapons and magic. From time to time we will have to fight bosses, which will require from us a more tactical approach.

A pirate tactical action game developed by a Shanghai-based studio working under Ubisoft. Skull & Bones takes place during the golden age of piracy on the waters of the Indian Ocean. The player assumes the role of a corsair who commands his ship while gradually building up his reputation and amassing more loot. At the beginning, the player has only a single ship, but as he progresses through the game he obtains an entire fleet of various ships that differ among each other in agility, firing range, and durability. Each ship can be customized with additional parts that change its looks and combat effectiveness. The game takes place in an open world in which the player competes with artificial intelligence and with other players. During the battles it is important to take advantage of water currents, prepare proper tactics, and to cooperate with allies. It is also important to select adequate ship for the type of task the player intends to complete.

It is a work of the experienced studios Rare – creators of such classic series as Donkey Kong and Banjoo-Kazooie. Players take on roles of corsairs taking part in countless adventures, both on land and open sea. Gameplay revolves around exploration and searching for legendary pirate treasures, though there is a lot of fighting against monsters, as well as epic naval battles of competing groups. As can be easily noticed, Sea of Thieves takes a lot of inspiration from classic tales of pirates, but depicts it in a very humorous way, which is emphasized with its cartoonish visuals.

A standalone expansion to Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag developed by an in-house Ubisoft studio. Unlike the base game, this time around, the player doesn't assume the role of Edward Kenway, but of his former quartermaster – Adewale, an emancipated black slave who joined the ranks of Assassins. Fifteen years after the events shown in the base game, the main protagonist sets off on a mission to retrieve a package from the hands of the Templars, however, as a result of an accident, his ship crashes near the city of Port-au-Prince, where Adewale encounters his enslaved kin. He does not linger for long and decides to rescue all of them as well as to take his revenge on the white torturers. In Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – Freedom Cry the gameplay revolves around the formula developed for the sake of Edward Kenway’s adventures – the expansion offers nine elaborate missions constituting a story mini-campaign. Moreover, players can also enjoy new weapons, such as blunderbusses, bombs, and machetes.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End is an action adventure game that uses themes depicted in the second and third parts of the movie series Pirates of the Caribbean. Developers from Eurocom Entertainment decided to show the story from the perspective of Captain Jack Sparrow, however players also get the opportunity to play as both William Turner and Elizabeth Swann. This installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean game series includes many elements previously depicted in the motion picture series such as the characters themselves, locations they visit on their adventures and iconic scenes that illustrate their fantastic stories. The game focuses on exploration, best accomplished by embarking on various quests and solving simple puzzles. Apart from that, players have to fight numerous foes. During combat, one can use a variety of skills distinctive for each of the playable characters, as well as special attacks and finishing blows. Moreover, nothing stands in player’s way to utilize objects found near the combat area. The licensed motion picture soundtrack accompanies the player all throughout the game.

The 16th installment in the popular jRPG series by Bandai Namco, which was originated in 1995 with the release of Tales of Phantasia on SNES. Tales of Berseria is also the first game in the franchise in which the main protagonist is not a male – the player assumes the role of a female character. She is a young pirate named Velvet Crowe, who lives in the fantasy kingdom of Midgand. Interestingly, the location had previously appeared in one of the earlier installments of the series – Tales of Zestiria – but the action of Tales of Berseria takes place much earlier. The Kingdom is composed of a few larger pieces of land and a number of little islands, so traveling through the world often requires sailing. Just like former installments of the Tales series, the title offers a complex combat system based on unique abilities and combos. Players observe the action from the third-person perspective and during fights they can control other members of the team. Tales of Berseria makes use of fully-3D graphics, but the game is still kept in an anime comic book style.

An online sailing simulator developed by the Ukrainian developer, Game-Labs, whose members worked previously on the STALKER and Total War series. The action of the game is set between the sixteenth and the eighteenth century - a period within the so-called Age of Sail. The gameplay focuses on the exploration of the enormous game world, where the players can trade, take assignments, and participate in realistic sea battles. The game features faithfully recreated weapons from the period, including various types of cannons, mortars, and carronades. One of the game's characteristic, and very realistic, features is the ship handling, as the player can control each sail separately and the crew management is also rather complex. The visuals are powered by the Unity engine, which makes the game look better than one could expect. Also, the creators' dedication to recreate the ships as authentic as possible deserves praise.

The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt lacks a main storyline driving the gameplay. The action takes place in an extensive, open-world environment recreating a large part of the Caribbean. The player controls a captain of a pirate ship, whose aim is to gain fame and riches at sea. The game consists of completing subsequent missions that focus mainly on combat and exploration. The player plunders cargo ships, pirate bases, forts, and harbors. Between the missions, the player can make improvements to their fleet, choosing from sixteen diversified classes of ships, upgraded alongside their progress in the game. In-game sailing features realistic mechanics, making it a great asset to the game - this element was based on the personal experiences of the creator, who is an avid sailor himself. The game has offers extended online features as well, allowing the players to create their own pirate clans.
