A brutal fighting game and a reboot of the Mortal Kombat video game series - one of the most popular fighting-oriented franchises, launched back in 1992. The game was created by NetherRealm and the works were supervised by Ed Boon - the father of the series. Thus brutal fighting is the core of the game - fights are filled with spectacular special attacks and creative ways of finishing off the enemy. The players received a massive number of both well-known and completely new fighters. The new X-Ray system was introduced as well, allowing the player to launch special attack sequences. New game modes were also added, including challenges, Story Mode and Tag Team, which allows two teams of two players to fight against each other. Combining classic elements with the new can be also observed in the visuals that combine 2D and 3D elements.

In The Darkness II, the player assumes the role of Jackie Estacado again, who returns as the Godfather of the Franchetti crime family. Memories of the past won't let him live as someone else however, and the ominous power lying within the protagonist only makes the situation worse. The attack on Jackie and the other members of his family initiates a large-scope gang war, and the mysterious Brotherhood stands behind it all. The game is based on the gameplay formula of its predecessor. Thus Jackie fights his enemies with several types of firearms, but he also makes use of special powers, such as demonic arms, causing chaos in the ranks of the opposition. Additionally, the protagonist's skills can be developed, which is done through buying subsequent talents gathered within a relatively extensive skill tree.

An action game based on a popular comic book series published by Top Cow. The Darkness video game was created by Starbreeze - a developer popular for The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay. Jackie Estacado, the game's protagonist, is an assassin working for the mob when he discovers that an ancient power known as Darkness lives within him. Jackie struggles against the power that wishes to dominate him, simultaneously engaging in his personal revenge after a crime family betrayed him and lured the protagonist into a trap. Jackie's uncle continues to send murderers after him, but various monsters from alternative reality attack the protagonist as well. The game can be played either from first-, or third-person perspective. In combat, the player makes use of both firearms and monstrous jaws leaning over the protagonist's shoulder. Because the game has a rather dark atmosphere, the action is set in places such as slums, shady corners, docks or subway tunnels of New York.
