ShellShock 2: Blood Trails is a sequel to the third-person action game ShellShock: Nam '67, created by Guerilla Games in 2004. The continuation created by the new team, Rebellion, adopts the convention of brutal survival horrors, presenting the action against the background of the US defeat in Vietnam.
Developers diversified gameplay compared to the first part, enriching historical facts about between American soldiers and the Vietcong army with with fictional themes, sometimes involving paranormal spheres.
The story begins as plane lands in the Cambodian jungle, carrying a mysterious chemical weapon known as Whiteknight. The package was to be picked up by a group of specially trained agents from the U.S. military, but the unit was unable to complete their mission and disappeared without a trace in the tropical forest. A month after the beginning of the expedition, only one of the daredevils returned to the base. However, he was no longer himself - he seemed insane, which could have been caused by the substance found in the plane, and perhaps heralded the existence of an even greater danger. Traces of infection in the soldier indicate that the problem is extremely serious and the plague may soon have serious consequences, turning soldiers into zombies. We play the role of the infected soldier's brother, facing the situation and trying to prevent further spread of the plague that transforms people into monsters.
In terms of atmosphere, Rebellion's work is the equivalent of films Jacob's Ladder and Apocalypse Now. The concept of the game was to show the hell of the Vietnam War, depicting constant anxiety, self-preservation instinct and hallucinations tormenting people. Attacks with napalm, jungle ambushes or a constant shortage of ammunition are just some of the problems that have to be solved throughout the ten-level single-player campaign.
Much more challenging are the brutal, bloody opponents who can appear just behind the main hero and hit him with a blunt tool or shoot with a firearm. A rich arsenal of weapons, including knives, machetes, pistols, machine guns, combat rifles, grenades and even rocket launchers, is used to eliminate the enemies.
The action in Blood Trails is observed from first-person perspective, and the game is powered by a modern graphic engine, ensuring accurate modelling of the environment and character models. Due to the high degree of violence, the product is intended exclusively for adult users.
