At the core of the gameplay lies exploration of space, gathering new materials and technologies, and devising new parts for eight modifiable ships. The protagonist can also be developed — the experience points we gather while playing can be spent on enhancing skills from the extensive skill tree.

They are in control of various spaceships that can be customized and upgraded. The game mechanics in Dead Star resembles old-school arcade shooters.
