3. Control. The best games of 2019 according to Gamepressure

Table of Contents

Release date: August 2019

Genre: TPP shooter

It's been several months since Control's release, and I still can't help but wonder how the marketing team could hurt this fine gem so much. Boring trailers completely failed to generate more interest in the newest child from the creators of Max Payne and only the launch trailer, which you can watch below, gave some decent idea of what we can expect from this game – but at that stage hardly anyone bothered to watch it, because previous promo materials did a heck of a job discouraging everyone.

Only the strikingly good review scores collected by Control after the launch and a small group of players who defied the odds, gave the game a chance to gain the recognition it deserved. And boy, does it deserve some respect as well… To those who were interested, the game offered an adventure in an unique world unbound from the rules of logic, where the main heroine, who just came for a job interview, becomes the director of a super-secret organization right off the bat, and a fridge can be a deadly enemy.

Control has a twisted, enigmatic storyline that keeps player in the dark for a long time, and enjoys it, before it starts explaining what and why. It has a well-implemented collectibles, which are not just typical junk, but notes that do a great job at expanding this extraordinary world – we collect them not to get some improvements, but from a genuine desire to learn something new. Very solid shooting mechanics, which becomes even better as the game progresses by giving us access to superpowers that complement traditional weapons. It also has probably the best single moment among all this year's games – my bet is that nothing that came out this year can beat the Ashtray Maze. The game can also boast visuals that bested contemporary console hardware. Giving this game a cold shoulder just because someone in the marketing department didn’t know how to do their job is a waste.
