11. Pathologic 2. The best games of 2019 according to Gamepressure

Table of Contents

Release date: May 2019

Genre: Psychologic survival horror

Available on: PC, XOne

Pathologic 2 is not so much a sequel to the iconic, if niche, 2005 title but rather an attempt to recreate the same game using modern technology and with fewer compromises that the creators had to make several years ago. But because during those fourteen years dividing one part from the other basically nobody dared to create something similar, any similarities between the two titles shouldn’t disturb anyone.

Pathologic 2 is a work which, like the most ambitious films or books, does not try to entertain the player. It will purposefully frustrate, humiliate and provoke them, and all this to give them some valuable lessons to think about. In the game, we play the role of a young surgeon, who is dispatched to a plague-infested city and has 12 days to prevent its complete extermination. At the same time we try to clear ourselves of the charges of murdering our own father.

The world of Pathologic 2 lives its own life and time goes by relentlessly, no matter what we do. This means that we will never manage to save everyone within the aforementioned 12 day, often we won't even be able save ourselves. Few people care about our problems in the gloomy world of the game, there’s never enough resources and noble deeds rarely go unpunished. In addition, after each failure, when we start playing again, richer with previous experiences, instead of having it easier, we have to face new obstacles. Without a doubt, this is neither an easy nor a pleasant game. But it is a game that has something important to say and is really worth listening to it.
