A medium-sized Belgian studio created a huge RPG that appealed to players more than Dragon Age: Inquisition, gave no chance to poorly animated Andromeda, and beat the success of Pillars of Eternity 2, which was similar in many respects and otherwise really solid. All this was possible thanks to balancing the captivating story and self-ironic humor, and above all thanks to the brilliant class mechanics – so flexible, and at the same time still not completely giving up on the idea of classes, it was something no other game offered.
Without the appropriate mods, some of the abilities can hurt or even kill companions and bystanders. There is a way to resurrect characters, but still, this provides a sense of constant danger, or balancing between life and death.
What's more, we can also kill NPCs, companions from the previous game (although not many of them are still alive, a few centuries after the previous part), and even the poor, innocent villagers. I admit I did it when I literally needed a few experience points to be promoted to the max level. And you know what? It still wasn't enough XP.
