In the standard edition of Age of Wonders 4 you will have 10 races to choose from, as well as 6 cultures. On this page of the guide you will get acquainted with the default versions of the races offered by the AoW4.

The game allows you to create your own factions, the tutorial on how to create your own factions in Age of Wonders 4 can be found on a separate page of the guide. On this page, you can read about the default factions and races that you can choose when starting the game. You will get acquainted with their attributes and in which cultural circle they are located. In addition, you will learn the name or nickname of the hero leading a given faction and what items they start the game with.
But remember, it's the cultures that determine the shape of the faction. We have described them all on a separate page of the guide.
Human
This is the first race that you can choose at the beginning of the game, from the Library of default factions offered in the game - it is represented by 4 nations.
- The first is called the Destined Humans and is represented by Alfred Eldestone, who unites Athli in the face of the approaching warlock-kings. By choosing him, you can play as a bearded prince, equipped with a lance, horse, and a Tome of Faith. By choosing this faction, you will gain bonuses in the form of "Fast Recuperation" and "Adaptable". As Prince Alfred, you will rule a civilization based on Feudalism with the following bonuses - "Chosen Uniters" and "Great Builders".
- The second human nation is called the Gnarled Frostlings and is represented by Artika, goddess of frostlings, whose domain is the frozen lands. By choosing it, you can play as a ruler equipped with a Staff of Spirit and a Tome of Cryomancy. If you decide to choose this faction, you will get 2 bonuses - "Fast Recuperation" and "Arctic Adaptation". As Artika, you will rule a civilization based on the culture of Barbarism with the following bonuses - "Ruthless Raiders" and "Powerful Evokers".
- The third human faction is called Human Paladins and is represented by Meshere Radiant, daughter of a knight and priestess, prophetess of her people. By choosing her, you will become a ruler equipped with a Staff of Spirit and a Tome of Faith. By choosing this faction, you will gain "Fast Recuperation" and "Arctic Adaptation" bonuses. As Meshera, you will play as a Barbarian-based civilization with the following bonuses - "Ruthless Raiders" and "Powerful Evokers".
- The last human faction is called Cruel Deathbringers and is represented by Nekron The Risen. By choosing this faction, you will become a necromancer equipped with a horse, a Lightning Orb and a Tome of Warding. By choosing this faction, you will gain "Fast Recuperation" and "Cold Blooded" bonuses. As Nekron, you will rule a dark-based civilization with the following bonuses - "Profilic Swarmers" and "Ritual Cannibals".
Elves
In the library you will find 3 factions of this type.
- The first is called the First Elves and is represented by Zaethyl Silverleaf, the Wild Guard, leader of the Immortal First Elves. By choosing her, you will become an Elven ruler, equipped with a Staff of Spirit and a Tome of Beasts. By choosing this faction, you will gain "Keen-Sighted" and "Arcane Focus" bonuses. As Zaethyl, you will leada High Civilization with the following bonuses - "Ancient Wise Ones" and "Adept Settlers".
- The second faction of the elves from the library is called Ashborn Hedonists and is represented by Cinren Toliath. He is an Elf seeking pleasure, and his subordinates with the help of magic try to discover all its sides with him. By choosing it, you can play as an Elven ruler, equipped with a Lightning Orb, a horse and a Tome of Evocation. By choosing this faction, you will gain bonuses - "Resistant" and "Arcane Focus". As Cinrena, you will rule a Mystical Civilization with the following bonuses - "Powerful Evokers" and "Profilic Swarmers".
- The third elven faction is called the Shadow Elves and is represented by Werlac Ze Insalduru, who, along with other elves, seek new warlock-kings or other higher powers that can be brought down and then worshiped or released. By choosing it, you can play as an elven ruler, equipped with a Frost Orb, a horse and a Tome of Evocation. By choosing this faction, you will gain "Keen-Sighted" and "Arcane Focus" bonuses. As Werlac, you will lead a Dark Civilization with the following bonuses - "Shadow Walkers" and "Scions of Evil".
Orcoid
At the start, you have 2 Orcoid factions to choose from.
- The first faction is called the Bloodfang Orcs and is represented by Asgera Spinesplitter. She gathers the Orcs under the banner of conquest and brutality. By choosing her, you will play as an Orc ruler, equipped with a Greataxe and a Tome of the Horde. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Strong" and "Ferocious". As Asgera, you will lead a Barbarian civilization with the following bonuses - "Ruthless Raiders" and "Fabled Hunters".
- The second faction is called the Enthralled Orcs and is represented by Karissa the Red. Under her leadership, her people aim for domination and destruction. By choosing her, you will play as an Orc ruler, equipped with Godir Greataxe and a Tome of Pyromancy. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Strong" and "Ferocious". As Karissa, you will lead a Barbarian civilization with the following bonuses - "Ruthless Raiders" and "Ritual Cannibals".
Dwarfkin
You can choose from 2 Dwarfkin factions.
- The first faction is called the Mountain Dwarves and is represented by the Tugrum Hammerall. By choosing her, you will become a Dwarfkin ruler equipped with a Greathammer and a Tome of Rock. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Ruthlessness" and "Defensive Tacticts". As Tugrum, you will lead a Industrious civilization with the following bonuses - "Great Builders" and "Adept Settlers".
- The second faction is called the Moonrock Dwarves and is represented by Fangir. The dwarves under his leadership are excellent builders and rune smiths who also explore the stars. By choosing him, you will play as a ruler of the dwarves, equipped with Godir Greataxe and a Tome of Warding. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Ruthlessness" and "Underground Adaptation". Feline
You can choose one faction, it's called Arcane Tigrans and is represented by Enam'ru Enkhanan. They are masters of using hidden paths, they are also great warriors when cornered. By choosing it, you will play as a ruler equipped with a Lighting Orb, a horse and a Tome of Warding. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Resolute" and "Desert Adaptation". You will lead a Mistic civilization with the following bonuses - "Mana Channleres" and "Shadow Walkers".
Halfling
You can choose one faction, it is called Wholesome Halflings and is represented by Ham Binger. He rules farmers, breeders, and he has skills that allow him to escape even from the most difficult situations. By choosing it, you will play as a ruler equipped with a bow, a horse and a Tome of Roots. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Quick Reflexes" and "Elusive". You will lead a civilization based on Feudalism with the following bonuses - "Adept Settlers" and "Devoetees of Good".
Goblinoid
You can choose one faction called Necrotic Goblins represented by Gloom Hooknail, a goblin ruler with a penchant for using assassins and working in the dark. By choosing this faction, you can become a ruler equipped with a Staff of Fire and a Tome of Souls. You will gain the following bonuses - "Fast Recuperation" and "Sneaky". You will lead a Dark civilization with the following bonuses - "Ruthless Raiders" and "Scions of Evil".
Ratkin
You can choose one faction called Fiendish Rodents and is represented by Kruul Blightlord. His subjects can be described as followers of their Lord, vicious, blood- and pain-thirsty. By choosing it, you can play as a ruler equipped with Posion Orb, a horse and a Tome of the Horde. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Quick Reflexes" and "Overwhelm Tactics". You will lead a Barbarian civilization with the following bonuses - "Profilic Swarmers" and "Ritual Cannibals".
Toadkin
You can choose from 2 factions.
- The first is called Crusading Croakers and is represented by Dafal Dea, the ruler of thinkers and philosophers who want to bring justice to all corners of the world. By choosing it, you can play as a ruler equipped with a Tome of Zeal. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Resilient" and "Water Adaptation". You will lead a High civilization with the following bonuses - "Experienced Seafarers" and "Imperialists" .
- The second available faction is called the Cursed Toadlings and is represented by Raina the Golden, a former human queen turned into a toad by a spell. The curse can only be reversed by living in moderation, which after spending many generations in this form seems unattainable. Play as a ruler equipped with a Greatsword and a Tome of Enchantment. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Resilient" and "Water Adaptation". You will lead a civilization based on Feudalism with the following bonuses - "Adept Settlers" and "Great Builders".
Molekin
You can choose one of two factions.
- The first is called Deep Dwellers and is represented by Blint the Underdelver. His subjects are famous for their patience and cunning, they are masters in constructing buildings as well as destroying them. By choosing it, you can play as a ruler equipped with a Greathammer and a Tome of Rock. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Bulwark" and "Underground Adaptation". You will lead a Industrious civilization with the following bonuses - "Wonder Architects" and "Adept Settlers".
- The second available faction is called the Underground Disciples and is represented by Xetevaca Worldshaper, the leader of the exiles from the other side of the Astral abyss. Play as a ruler equipped with Godir Greataxe and a Tome of Enchantment. By choosing this faction, you will gain the following bonuses - "Bulwark" and "Underground Adaptation". You will lead an Industrious civilization with the following bonuses - "Fabled Hunters" and "Gifted Casters".
