The FV4202 is another universal tank available for the British. This tank, as an improvement on the Centurion Mk.7/1, introduces several changes, in comparison with the predecessor. It is lighter and better armored, its turret has a new shape and the time necessary to reload, between individual shots, is shorter. These changes allow this tank fit between the other tier ten medium tanks, while not affecting its playing style - the experienced drivers of the Centurion tanks will feel at home with the FV4202.
Development, equipment, crew
FV215b has the elite status from the very beginning.
Preferred equipment: shell rammer, vertical stabilizer, binocular telescope
Optional equipment: camouflage net, improved ventilation, coated optics, improved guidance system
Skills and perks: sixth sense for the commander, repair for the rest of the crew. Then, brothers in arms for the entire crew.
Weak points
Although the FV4202 is a bit smaller than the Centurion Mk.7/1, its hull is still quite poorly armored. The only discernible change is the increased angle of the front armor plate, thanks to which it is capable of repelling some of the shells fired by the vehicles of tier eight. The lower armor plate and the sides of the hull, are still vulnerable to any enemy fire. The turret of the FV4202 is, unfortunately, weaker than in the case of the Centurion tanks, because it has not been fitted with cannon armor. In spite of the increased angle of the front armor, it is much easier to penetrate than in the case of the predecessor.
Direct hits into the vehicle's front often damage the ammo compartment and the engine is located at the hull's rear.
How to play...
...as the driver of the FV4202?
- Just like its predecessors, the FV4202 has the top speed of 40km/h. It should not race for strategic points on the map (e.g. the hills of Karelia), because it will reach there as the last. Its mobility, however, allows it to change positions or ride up the slope, and the other elevations, easily.
- This vehicle is perfect for combat from behind elevations - after you enter the hull down position, you can easily shoot alongside the slope, while exposing only a fragment of the turret, to fire. Unfortunately, unlike the Centurion tanks, it does not have as good armor there, which is why you should hide right after firing your shot, until you reload.
- The 105mm Royal Ordnance L7A1 cannon is one of the best weapons for medium tanks - it has perfect penetration value and excellent accuracy. This cannon allows you to penetrate the front armor of tier nine and ten vehicles and, that is why no opponent should be an insurmountable obstacle for you. Additionally, unlike the Centurion Mk.7/1, the time required to reload has been brought down.
- The FV4202 can fire HESH ammo. It is a variation of the high explosive ammo, of much higher penetration value and which deals more damage than your basic ammo subcaliber. It is perfect to destroy the enemy medium tanks. You only need to watch out for the enemies covered with additional armor, and for shots at your tracks - in this case, the damage that you receive is minimal.
- It is necessary that you hide your lower-front armor from enemy fire, at all times, because the ammo compartment, which it covers, is susceptible to damage.
- Although your glacis plate is capable of repelling some of the shells, you should keep using the hull down tactic, and only expose the turret that is resistant to damage. While utilizing this tactic, I recommend that you move alongside the hill, to avoid artillery fire - it often takes one direct hit only to destroy you.
- Thanks to the good range of vision (410 meters on the improved turret) this vehicle is perfect as a passive scout. After you have mounted the binocular telescope, and wait for 3 seconds (time necessary to activate it) you will be able to detect most enemy tanks before they can see your FV4202.
...against the FV4202?
- This vehicle is very poorly armored (not counting the glacis plate and the turret) - each shot, even from a cannon mounted onto a light tank, should deal damage.
- Unlike the in the case of the Centurion tanks, you can target the turret here, best in the area of the turret ring or the sides - due to no armoring of the cannon, damaging this vehicle here is much easier than in the case of the predecessors.
- While aiming at the lower-front armor of the FV4202, you can damage the ammo compartment and wound the driver, which will make it more difficult for this tank to continue combat.
- The greatest problem are the FV4202 tanks in the hull down position. To defeat them, it is necessary to flank the enemy, charge at it frontally (which involves losses) or to summon the artillery support.
- Since the FV4202 is not too fast a medium tank, a well-learned artillerist is capable to score a direct hit against this tank, in motion. Sometimes one shell is enough to eliminate it from further combat.
- Just like the Centurion Mk.7/1, this vehicle has access to the HESH ammo, which considerably increases the damage dealt by it.
