The Centurion Mk.7/1 is the logical successor of the Centurion Mk.I tank. Practically every element has been improved here: it has better glacis plate, a stronger driving unit and, which is the most important, it has the best cannon available for tier nine medium tanks: the 105mm Royal Ordnance L7A1. This vehicle drives identically with the predecessor, but thanks to new armament, it is capable of damaging any vehicle in the game. Additionally, the availability of the HESH ammo, for this tank, allows it to deal damage at the cost of the penetration value - these shells allow it to win one-on-one duels with the other tier nine medium tanks.
Development, equipment, crew
The first module that it is necessary to install, is new suspension. Only after that, will you be able to mount the OQF 20-pdr Type A Barrel cannon (or the Type B, if you have already developed it for the Caernarvon). Now, you should unlock a new turret and the 105mm Royal Ordnance L7A1 cannon. The Rolls-Royce Griffon engine (available also for the Conqueror and the FV215b) and the radio are supposed to be unlocked as the last.
Preferred equipment: shell rammer, vertical stabilizer, binocular telescope
Optional equipment: camouflage net, improved ventilation, coated optics, improved guidance system
Skills and perks: sixth sense for the commander, repair for the rest of the crew. Then, brothers in arms for the entire crew.
Weak points
The armoring of the Centurion Mk.7/1 is identical with the one in the Centurion Mk.I, apart for one slight exception: its glacis plate is 121mm thick, which sometimes allows it to repel shells of the penetration value of 175mm, and protect the vehicle from fire from light tanks. The turret of the vehicle is equipped with a very thick cannon armor, which is impenetrable for most weapons. If you know how to reach the enemy tanks' weak points, you can try shooting at the roof of the turret, right above the cannon armor.
Direct hits into the vehicle's front often damage the ammo compartment and the engine is located at the hull's rear.
How to play...
...as the driver of the Centurion Mk.7/1?
- This vehicle is as slow as the Centurion Mk.I - it should not race for strategic points of the map (e.g. the hills of Karelia), because it will be the last one to reach there. However, its mobility allows for easy changing of positions or an easy ride uphill.
- The Centurion Mk.7/1 is perfect for combat from behind elevations - after you enter the hull down position, you can easily shoot along the slope, while exposing to fire only a fragment of the turret, equipped with thick cannon armor.
- The 105mm Royal Ordnance L7A1 cannon is the best weapon available for tier nine medium tanks - it has an excellent penetration value and perfect accuracy. This cannon allows you to penetrate, frontally, vehicles of tier nine and ten, which is why no enemy will be an obstacle for you.
- The Centurion Mk.7/1 has access to the HESH shells. It is a variety of the high explosive shells, with a much higher penetration value and which deals more damage than your basic subcaliber shells. It is perfect against the enemy's medium tanks. Still, you need to watch out for the enemies covered with additional armor, and for fire against your tracks - in this case, damage is low.
- It is necessary that you hide your lower-front armor from enemy fire, at all times, because the ammo compartment, which it covers, is susceptible to damage.
- Although the glacis plate is capable of repelling some of the shells, you should use the tactic of hiding the hull and exposing your turret which is invulnerable to damage. I recommend that, while fighting in the hull down position, you move along the hill to avoid being hit with an artillery shell - it often takes only one direct hit to destroy this vehicle.
- Thanks to the good range of vision (410 meters on the improved turret) this vehicle is perfect as a passive scout. After you have mounted the binocular telescope, and wait for 3 seconds (time necessary to activate it) you will be able to detect most enemy tanks before they can see your Centurion Mk.7/1.
...against the Centurion Mk.7/1?
- This vehicle has poor armor (except for the cannon armor and the glacis plate) - any shot, even from a cannon mounted onto a light tank, should deal damage to you.
- By aiming at the lower-front armor plate of the Centurion Mk.7/1, you can damage its ammo compartment and wound the driver, which makes it more difficult for the enemy to continue fighting.
- The greatest problem are the Centurion Mk.7/1 tanks in the hull down position. To defeat them, it is necessary to flank the enemy, charge at it frontally (which involves losses) or to summon the artillery support.
- Since the Centurion Mk.7/1 is not too fast a medium tank, a well-learned artillerist is capable to score a direct hit against this tank, in motion. Sometimes one shell is enough to eliminate it from further combat.
- I recommend against frontal one-on-one duels with this tank. After it lads the HESH shells, it deals the largest damage, from among tier nine medium tanks!
