You start the game in a house - this is your "base". Later, you will be able to use it to return to the already completed areas, e.g., to gather additional collectible items, and use it as a starting point for subsequent stages of the game. In the beginning, during tutorial, you must get to the right side of the room where pictures hang. Interacting with them transports you to a given level (you unlock them one by one). Completing each level results in a new photo being added to the album lying on the table, which you can browse.
