This page of the Syberia: The World Before game guide contains a walkthrough of the Vaghen - Silberspiegel refuge, autumn 2005 part 4 chapter. We explain step by step how to take Dana's letter out of the machine. You will also learn how to use the key and how to remove the heart.
Get Dana's letter from inside the automaton.
Opening the machine is quite a complex task To make this page more readable, we've divided it into several sections.
Key
Go down to the first floor of the building and examine Leni's wheelchair. Lift the armrest on the right side and take the key.
Return to Leni's room, approach the machine, and inspect its bowtie. Twist the right and left sides of the bowtie to reveal a keyhole.
Open your inventory and click on the key. You have to correctly set its elements to make it fit into the keyhole. Insert the key into the hole and turn it clockwise several times.
Then unhook the flaps to reveal the center of the machine.
Heart
Set the key correctly and use it on the lock to the heart of the machine.
The handle at the top is used to stop the heart mechanism. Wait until the gold element at the bottom is exposed and quickly stop the heart. Remove the gold element, then turn the knob in the lower right corner until the parts blocking the heart retract.
Then put the last element down and remove the heart. Put Oscar inside.
Letter
Switch the character to Oscar and raise the machine's hands up. Click on the arrow at the bottom of the screen twice. This will make the machine tilt and expose the keyhole on the back.
Switch to Kate and examine the back of the machine. Set the key into the correct shape and turn it like in the screenshot above.
Switch to Oscar and click once on the arrow pointing up to make the machine rise a little. Switch the character to Kate and uncover the flap on the back of the machine, under the keyhole. Then pull the small lever down.
Switch to Oscar and lower its left hand down 2 times. Then, switch back to Kate and investigate the front of the machine. Hold the ball and guide it upwards until you are interrupted by a block along the way. Turn the block to pave the way for the sphere and move it to the left.
Turn the next element and bring the ball to the very top. When the sphere reaches the gold element, follow the directions on the screen to detach the mechanism part.
Then bring the ball back to the right side of the mechanism and adjust the piece so that the sphere can move upward.
Switch to Oscar and click on the arrow pointing down to reveal the keyhole on its back again. Finally, raise its left hand 1 time.
As Kate, insert the key into the hole on Oscar's back and turn it counterclockwise. This will change the arrangement of the mechanism where the sphere is. Guide the ball to the gold element on the right and follow the directions on the screen.
Finally, the gold element with the initials needs to be turned 180 degrees.
When the machine head opens, set the key correctly and turn the lock. Take Dana's letter out of the hat, then examine the stamp and sender's address on the back of the envelope.
