Side objectives

Acquire one of your competitors.
In this mission, you will not only have to expand the railway network, but also deal with the competition. At the very beginning of the game, you can deal with your rivals quite easily. It is enough to issue bonds and acquire both companies as soon as possible. You can immediately use the cash you raised to settle your debts, and you will still have enough money to expand your business. On the other hand, if you do not want to invest all of the money, you can buy only one rival - Don Lorenzo (orange). He is close to your network and will create expansions into your production centers and cities, and will often send spies and saboteurs. Beatrix von Pomp is a pretty passive rival who has her lines far to the south. I recommend buying at least 20% of the shares of one of the companies. Later, the value of rival companies will increase, and you will have to spend more on the purchase of shares.
In the beginning you will be guided by your new mentor, but you will quickly gain the full freedom of action. Start by creating connections between Baltimore and the nearest cities and production centers. Two large stations can cover all four companies between Baltimore and New York. The next step is to build a connection between these two cities. It is worth to put additional sidings or dual-track here, because a lot of trains will be operating on this route.
Research is a crucial matter in this mission. The setting of this scenario is at the time of the beginning of the railway, and as a result, you will receive the first train prototypes at the start of the mission. They will be slow, with low power and endurance. Try to get better engines as quickly as possible. If possible, build a university in a big city or hire a spy and send it to the competition.
The next stage is the constant transport of cotton to Pittsburgh, of Cloth to Baltimore, and of Clothing to New York. The most demanding part is to create a cheap connection between Pittsburgh and Baltimore. You will pay a colossal sum for simply laying track in a straight line, but if you lead the route carefully through the valleys between the mountains, the costs will be much smaller. Place supply towers and a siding to operate additional trains. There are many production centers around Pittsburgh that you can use, and Toledo is also nearby. It is a big city, which has a great market. This is a good place to expand your business, after the expansion on the coast. Thanks to this, you will easily achieve the required company value.
