Phasmophobia: Hunting phase guide Phasmophobia guide, tips
Last update: 10 November 2020
From this chapter of the guide to Phasmophobia you will learn about the Hunting phase and what is the best way of hiding from an attacking ghost.
In Phasmophobia, the majority of ghosts aren't eager to reveal their physical form. Until they are provoked or a specific requirement is met, they remain invisible for the players. During the hunting phase, the ghosts are assuming their physical form. They will do whatever they can to get and kill one of the hunters. The hunt ends once a ghost succeeds in eliminating one of the players or when the timer runs out.
When does the hunting phase occur?
When the light in the building suddenly begins to flicker (not only the upper lights, but flashlights and UV devices as well), the radio communication becomes disrupted, and all doors and passages become blocked, it's a sign that the ghost will take its physical form and the hunting phase is about to begin. Be prepared! Hunting can occur in following situations:
- After the startup phase that is available on lower difficulty levels;
- On professional difficulty level, the ghosts can attack immediately after the hunters enter the building;
- Lower Sanity level increases the frequency of the hunting phase;
- Whenever a ghost is provoked verbally or by entering its territory;
- The type of the ghost impacts the frequency of the hunt. More agressive ghosts like Demons, Oni, and Wraiths, will hunt more frequently. They don't need any special encouragement for that.
How can you defend yourself? Where to hide?
When the hunting phase starts (the light begins to flicker) and the ghost is trying to take its physical form, the players have only a few seconds to perform actions that might help them stay alive.
- Crucifix: it is used for stopping the ghosts from entering the hunting phase. It is effective only near the spirit and it has a limited range;
- Smudge Sticks: once lit, the sticks will generate smoke for 15 seconds. This will prevent a ghost from attacking for a limited time. However, the sticks won't stop the hunting phase.
- Area in front of the building: if some characters remain outside the building when the hunting phase starts, they will remain beyond the reach of the ghost;
- A good hideout: the hunters can try to hide in closets, bathroms, wardrobes. The important thing is to lock the door, crouch, not move, not generate any sounds (the ghosts can hear them), and turn the face towards the wall so that the character won't look directly at the ghost. If you're dealing with a Wraith, you must additionally hide behind a solid wall because this ghost can see through doors and furniture;
- Salt: only effective against Wraith. Scattering the salt in narrow passages, corridors and doors (wherever the ghost might follow the player during the hunting phase) will stop the enemy from an attack;
- Escape: the majority of ghosts (except for the Revenant) are moving slower than the player or with the same speed. This means that it is possible to escape them. However, you must watch out that you don't block yourself on an obstacle, for example, on a piece of furniture. If you block yourself, you will lose precious seconds that cannot be regained. During the escape, it is a good idea to turn behind solid walls so that the ghost will lose you from its sight.
