Today, via the Nintendo Today! news app announced during yesterday’s Nintendo Direct, a release date for the live action Legend of Zelda movie was revealed. Nintendo is calling their shot very far in advance with this one, as the release date is planned for March 26th, 2027, almost exactly two years from now. At this time, we still don’t know any details about who will be cast in the film or what the story will be.

The Legend of Zelda movie has a release date, and it’s two years away

With how often games and projects are delayed these days, it’s surprising to get such a specific release date for The Legend of Zelda movie when it’s planned for the year 2027. Even yesterday, during Nintendo’s own presentation, several games simply announced that they would be released in 2026, without getting any more specific. Of course, we will have to be patient to learn more about this movie, but maybe Nintendo has given themselves enough time to account for anything.

So far, what little we do know about the movie includes who is directing it. Nintendo announced that Wes Ball will be directing back in November 2023 when we first learned the movie was in development. Ball is most recently known for directing last summer’s Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, as well as The Maze Runner trilogy.

Nintendo will be providing most of the film’s financial backing, but Sony Pictures Entertainment will also be co-financing. This is a collaboration that will raise the eyebrows of most video game enthusiasts. While Sony and Nintendo aren’t quite rivals in the way that Sony and Microsoft are, it’s still interesting to see two of the three major console creators working together on something.

The announcement of this Legend of Zelda movie followed shortly after the success of the Super Mario Bros. Movie, which ended up becoming massively successful in 2023. That success has certainly inspired Nintendo to try other films as well. But will The Legend of Zelda adapt as well as Super Mario? The Legend of Zelda video game franchise’s breakout success was Breath of the Wild with the launch of the Nintendo Switch console. Prior to that release, The Legend of Zelda games were highly praised, but never as well known by the public as Mario.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie had many reasons for its success, but its emphasis on animation and comedy, along with a cast of recognizable characters, certainly helped. Will a more serious live-action film, where many casual fans will still think Link is the one named Zelda, find as strong an audience? We will have to wait to see. Maybe just don’t cast Chris Pratt as Link.
