Source Code of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077 Auctioned for $1 Million
Source code of The Witcher 3 and Cyberpunk 2077, as well as other data stolen during a ransomware attack on CD Projekt's servers, will be auctioned off on one of hacker internet forums. The starting price for the files is one million dollars.
It's been less than 2 days since we learned of a ransomware attack on CD Projekt's servers, but the case is developing at lightning speed. On Tuesday, the company's representatives confirmed in an official statement that valuable data related to its operation, as well as game source codes, fell into the hands of hackers. The criminals gave the Polish company 48 hours to respond and pay the ransom, otherwise the stolen data would be made public. However, the creators of Cyberpunk 2077 firmly refused any negotiations, contacted the security services and started their own investigation into the case.
Today, anonymous hackers decided to show that their threats are not empty. As we reported earlier, the full source code of Gwent: The Witcher Card Game is already available on the web. Tom's Hardware has just reported that criminals are preparing to start an auction of files containing the source code of The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, Cyberpunk 2077 and Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales, as well as a test version of The Witcher 3 with support for ray tracing (aka The Witcher 3 RTX). Additionally, the pack includes full set of stolen company documentation, including the finance, HR and investment departments.
The bidding will take place on the Russian-speaking hacker forum Exploit. The starting price for the package of stolen data is one million dollars. However, the criminals are ready to immediately part with the entire data if they receive an equivalent of $7 million. The transaction is to be carried out in cryptocurrencies.
Those willing to participate in the auction must make a down payment of 0.1 Bitcoin (about $4,500). Criminals confirm that the auction will be held only on the Exploit forum and will begin on Thursday, at 1 PM Moscow time (4 AM PT). As proof of actually having the data, the authors of the post present a list of files acquired during the leak. However, only regular forum members have access to it.
