Artificial intelligence and machine learning are currently the hottest topics in the technology industry. Therefore, we weren't surprised when references to these solutions surfaced in Sony's latest financial report.

  1. The corporation brags in the document about using AI and machine learning to accelerate game development and cut costs.
  2. Importantly, these aren't just boasts meant to satisfy the stock market. Sony revealed that machine learning was used in the development of Marvel's Spider-Man 2, among others, to automatically synchronize subtitles to dialogue in different languages.

AI is being used more often in game development. However, it's worth noting that, for now, the industry is approaching this very sensibly. No one is trying to completely replace humans here. This technology is used to reduce costs and facilitate the work of developers.

Synchronizing subtitles from Marvel's Spider-Man 2 or creating intermediate animation frames in Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars are examples of using AI to relieve developers in areas where human creativity isn't crucial. Thanks to this, devs can devote attention to things where they are much more needed.

AI and machine learning aren't the only technologies Sony is investing in. The corporation also announced in the report that it is constructing a Volumetric Capture Studio, enabling the creation of character and object models through scanning real individuals and items, as well as capturing animations in this way.

Furthermore, Sony is working to ensure that different departments within the company work more closely together. For instance, 3D elements developed for a music video were later reused in a game and a short animated film.
