God of War Ragnarok on PC Has a Major Flaw Fixed by a Fan
PC gamers clearly didn't like the fact that God of War: Ragnarok requires a PSN account. So one of them developed a mod that changes that.
The PC release of God of War: Ragnarok last week was not a complete success. On the day after the game's release on Steam, only 66% of player reviews were positive. The situation has gotten a little better, as currently, 70% of the reviews in this store are praising this title, but it's still evident that the reception of the game is much less enthusiastic than in the case of the previous part.
One of the main reasons for negative reviews (apart from, for example, memory leak) is the requirement to have a PlayStation Network account, even though it is a game exclusively for a single player. This situation irritated PC gamers so much that one of them – iArtorias – decided to do something about it and developed a modification called NoPSSDK.
The mod removes the requirement to have a PSN account. After its installation, the game may still ask if we want to link our PlayStation and Steam accounts (as in the screenshot below), but it is enough to say no to proceed further.
- NoPSSDK – download the mod from our FTP (the author allows to freely publish mirrors of his project)
The installation is simple - you need to unpack the archive with the mod into the game folder. For most players this will be enough, but if an error appears later, delete the file that you will find in the folder:
C:\Users\[YOUR USERNAME]\Saved Games\God of War Ragnarok\[AccountID]\userpreferences
Some players have reported that the game still requires a PSN account. In such cases, the mod author advises blocking the GoWR.exe file in the firewall.
The requirement for a PlayStation Network account in single-player games is ridiculous, so the creation of a mod is pleasing. After all, one of the biggest advantages of PC as a gaming platform is that fans can often change what they don't like through modifications.
Recall that the PSN requirement severely damaged another Sony game – Helldivers 2. In this case, we are talking about an online game, so typically this wouldn't cause such a reaction, but players were angered by the fact that the requirement to have such an account was added only a few months after the release (despite earlier suggestions). In this case, the reaction was so negative that Sony backed out of this decision. Players' victory was temporary, however, as the requirement returned in the PC version of Ghost of Tsushima. The Japanese corporation seems determined to require a PSN account for all its new PC conversions. So we can expect to see many more mods in the style of NoPSSDK in the future.
