New Fortnite FPS mode is here. We explain Fortnite Ballistic
If you are interested in Fortnite's new FPS mode, Ballistic, here you will find all the basics that will get you started.
Times when Fortnite was only a Battle Royale game (some older fans can even remember that it started in tower defense-like mode called Save the World) are long over. Now it’s hard to say it’s a single game anymore. It’s more similar to a platform to convey many ideas and events, like Travis Scott’s, Marshmello’s or Metallica’s concerts. Now, Epic takes on a new venture, adding a Ballistic mode. This type of play takes a lot from titles like Counter Strike or Valorant. This FPS spin puts Fortnite’s spirit into a more classical, old-school genre. Since some of us might not be familiar with those, let’s try to put into words how the mode works and what to expect from it.
Ballistic mode in Fortnite explained
If a live-service game wants to live a long, prosperous life with a big and steady playerbase, it must evolve constantly providing new content and mechanics. That’s why Fortnite is adding a new mode, Ballistic, resembling classic shooters, where its iconic building and last man standing rules are put aside, in favor of tactics and teamplay. How to play it, then?
The idea is simple:
- A match takes place on a map with two sites, A and B. The attacking team has to detonate the Rift Point Devices at one of them, while the other is tasked with defending these places.
- Successfully detonating Rift Point Device from either site, A or B, will grant a point to attackers.
- Eliminating all the players of the opposing team will also score a point, as there are no respawns during the round in this game mode.
- In order to win the whole match, one team must score 7 points.
- After 6 rounds, the roles of the squads will change – attackers become defenders and vice versa.
When it comes to the arsenal, players start with 800 Credits and a Ranger Pistol. Depending on your, and your team’s, performance, subsequent rounds will award you a different number of Credits to use and buy more advanced weapons, gadgets, and shields. Be careful, as dying during a round will result in you losing all your gear, so you will start the next one empty handed and will have to buy new items. However, picking up gear from your fallen teammates or foes is a viable strategy.
While all those rules might appear complex at first, they are no different from other, similar productions. It will take you a couple of matches to get a full grasp of how things work. Several more rounds and you will be able to optimize your strategy, so don’t get discouraged. Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that Ballistic is in the Early Access state, so many things are subject to change. Have fun!
