“How Dare You.” Harry Potter Star Points Out Problem with New Adaptation from HBO
The Harry Potter star commented on HBO's plans for a new film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's books, which is currently in development.
In 2023, we learned that Harry Potter will get a brand new adaptation, however, this time not a movie, but a TV series. The announcement caused mixed feelings among fans of the young wizard's adventures – some were excited at the thought of a new version that would perhaps be more faithful to the books, while others were not convinced by the idea, as they argued that it wasn't necessary, as the movies were still holding up well.
Somewhere in between these groups is Fiona Shaw, star of the film version of Harry Potter, who played Aunt Petunia there. The actress was asked by People at the official premiere of the second season of Bad Sisters what she thought of HBO's plans.
Shaw, after she jokingly commented on “how dare you” touch HP, revealed that she thinks the films are still very fresh, but perhaps a new generation of fans needs just that. So it looks like she's not entirely convinced by the idea, but she's not criticizing it, not ruling out that a new audience might need it.
I wish them well. I mean, can stories be retold? They must be retold over time. It seems to me no time [has passed] since we told it, but maybe it's [for] a whole new generation.
The first film in the Harry Potter series was released in 2002, while the last one was released in 2011, so it's only been a dozen years since the cinematic series ended. That's not a long time, especially since the movies are still eagerly watched and loved by fans around the world, although they are aware of its shortcomings due to the limited film form – there was no room to tell everything in them. The TV series will have the advantage over them in that there will be more room for more side plots, since an entire one season is to be devoted to each book.
