Gearbox Head Responds to Terminally Ill Fan's Wish to Play Borderlands 4. „We're Going to Do Whatever We Can to Make Something Happen”
A terminally ill fan of the Borderlands series turned to the community for help in contacting Gearbox Software. Shortly thereafter, the head of the studio got in touch with him and will help make his dream come true.
The day before yesterday, a post appeared on Reddit, published by 37-year-old Caleb McAlpine, an avid fan of the Borderlands series. He said he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and doctors estimated he had 7-12 months to live in the worst-case scenario, and even if he responded well to chemotherapy, he could expect less than 2 years.
Due to this, Caleb turned to Reddit users for help in reaching the developers of Borderlands, as he would like to be able to play an early version of the fourth installment in the series before he dies. The post reached Randy Pitchford, CEO of Gearbox Software, who brought some good news on X.
"Caleb and I are now chatting via e-mail and we’re going to do whatever we can to make something happen."
Caleb confirmed this in his Reddit thread, thanking everyone for their help and noting how amazing the online community is. The player is also running a fundraiser on GoFundMe, where you can help him cover his medical costs.
It is worth mentioning that this is not the first such situation in the Borderlands community. In 2019, series fan Trevor Eastman, who was also diagnosed with cancer, was given the opportunity to play an early version of the third installment after posting on Reddit. Gearbox Software even added a legendary weapon called the Trevonator to the game in his honor.
In turn, we still know very little about Borderlands 4. The game was announced in August this year during Opening Night Live, where a short trailer was presented, hiding many secrets. The title will offer 4 playable characters and, as is typical for the series, will put a strong emphasis on characteristic humor. It will be available on PC and PS5 and XSX/S consoles, and its premiere is planned for 2025.
