Elon Musk Announces Cheap Electric Cars in 3 Years
During Tesla Battery Day Elon Musk talked about his plans for the company's development. He announced a more affordable autonomous car model, more efficient batteries and an increase in production to 20 million units per year.
The CEO of Tesla and SpaceX likes to make waves. However, this year's Battery Day was without major fireworks. Some improvements in existing car models have been announced, as well as the cheapest version of Tesla.
So far, the least expensive autonomous car model was the Tesla Model 3, available from $35 thousand. Its successor, which is to appear on sale in three years, is to come down with the price to 25 thousand dollars. The reduction is to be possible thanks to a new battery, which will be cheaper to produce and more efficient.
This battery is supposed to offer 5 times more capacity and be 6 times more powerful. Thanks to this, the cost of producing the component will decrease by 14%. The range of the car will increase by 16%. What is behind the reduction of production costs? According to The Guardian, Tesla's factory in Nevada will recycle the batteries. This is to reduce the use of expensive cobalt used in the batteries to a minimum.
There were also some promises typical of Musk. The target number of Tesla cars produced annually is to reach 20 million. Will the company actually be able to do that? Will it share the fate of the autonomous taxis that were supposed to be available this year but were completely ignored on the conference?
