Need for Speed has left a lot of space in arcade racing market. The last instalment of this series is tepidly received Unbound, which debuted nearly 2 years ago. It doesn’t draw in too much of an audience (via SteamDB). Currently its biggest competition is NFS Heat, which is an even older (and surprisingly more successful) production. This niche is starting to be filled in by indie and mobile games that more and more boldly drift onto the scene. Recently, CarX Street, made its way onto personal computers, yet it’s far from ideal, as current reviews on Steam classify the reception as “Mixed” (55% of positive reviews). One of the reasons for that may be the necessity of constant grind that makes earning money and XP very hard. What appears to be causing this is… lack of microtransactions? As shocking as it might sound, don’t fire up your torches and hide your pitchforks. Let me explain.

Why lack of microtransactions in CarX Street are making it hard to earn money and XP?

Not everyone prefers more realistic driving model offered by games like Forza Horizon or Gran Turismo. Some of us would rather take on more action-like style racing titles offered by arcade productions like NFS. The thing is that we didn’t have too many of such recently, so CarX Technologies studio decided to step in and port their CarX Street to PC. The problem is that the game turned out to be really grindy, making it exceptionally hard and mundane to earn money and XP. What gives?

First, let’s make it clear that this game is buy-to-play on computers, costing $20 on Steam, while it is free-to-play on mobile devices. The reason why it matters is rather simple – the title was created with microtransactions in mind, that made it easier to make progress on phones, while they are completely missing from PC version. Usually, it’s great when creators decide to ditch MTX, yet in case of porting a production from F2P to B2P they should account for the changes it brings. Unfortunately, it seems that’s not what happened in CarX Street (at least not fully), leaving it with heavy and unpleasant grind with no option to make it easier.

The last sentence is not entirely true, as among many complaints on Steam’s Community Hub, as well as on Reddit, there are voices of players who criticize other fans, who resort to the use mods to facilitate influx of money and XP. As PC gaming allows for use of mods, it is a great way to modify gameplay to our liking, by changing the rate of resource earned included. As long as it stays in singleplayer mode, it shouldn’t be of any issue. It seems, however, that there are instances of people abusing this method in multiplayer too, which should be condemned.

As we can see, the developers didn’t think through the economy of the ported CarX Street. This is especially painful, as some of the reviews point out that this is an otherwise quite pleasant title that has a chance to recreate the NFS Underground feeling that we’ve been looking for. For now, we can keep adding our voices to countless threads on CarX Street’s Steam page in hopes that creators will address this issue.
