Diablo 2: Resurrected Won't Run on PC if Your CPU Doesn't Support AVX
Another problem for Diablo 2: Resurrected players. It turns out that the PC version of the game will not run if the computer does not support the AVX technology. This is a surprise, because it was not mentioned in the minimum requirements.
- Some Diablo 2: Resurrected players have complained about not being able to run the game despite meeting the requirements;
- It turns out that the culprit is AVX support, which was not mentioned in the system requirements;
- Blizzard is currently working on an update to address the issue.
Yesterday, the long-awaited release of Diablo 2: Resurrected took place. Unfortunately, it was not without problems, as many players could not evenlaunch the game due to overloaded servers. It turns out that this is not the only problem, which Blizzard will have to deal with. Since the launch, on various forums (including Reddit and the official Blizzard forum) players have been complaining about not being able to launch the game. The problem is apparently the lack of support for AVX technology (Advanced Vector Extensions), which are advanced instruction sets for individual processors. AVX support was not mentioned as necessary in the minimum system requirements so it became a key issue for gamers whose PCs do not meet this point. It should be added that since 2011 most processors are AVX compatible, so it's probably a problem with slightly older processors, or exceptions from a later period. A similar affliction affected Cyberpunk 2077 but a recent hotfix got rid of the issue.
At this point, Blizzard has only addressed the issue through one of their support staff members by the handle Drakuloth:
"The reason we haven’t been communicating regarding the suspicion regarding AVX is that we aren’t sure that’s the cause just yet. Keep in mind that we’re just Customer Support - we don’t work on the engine itself so our insight into the inner workings is limited. However what I can say is that if this is the issue, it is not working as intended - AVX support was not supposed to be a requirement for the game, so if the engine is requiring it, that’s unexpected behavior."
The investigation is continuing. We'll let you know when we learn more.
A few hours later, the staff member updated his statement and announced that a patch to fix this bug is on its way:
"As mentioned by other posters, the team’s identified the problem and is working on a patch for it at the moment. We don’t have an exact ETA on when it’s going to be released but it should resolve itself for most players with a machine that meets the system requirements."
Until the AVX situation is resolved, your best option is to check for yourself to see if your CPU supports it. If you want to find out how to do that, go here. And of course, be patient until the bug is fixed.
