Co-creator of Halo is Delighted With PS5's SSD

The PS5's technical solutions delight subsequent game developers associated with hardware platforms from other manufacturers. Co creator of Halo considers the SSD in the new console a „huge difference”.

We still don't know everything about the upcoming Sony console.

Sony's 9th generation console is stirring a lot of emotions. The commotion is kept alive by limited nformation, which the creators have provided so far. Nevertheless, they have managed to provoke a lot of discussions, from which not much results. An example of this is a conversation with the co-creator of the Halo series. VGC conducted an interview with Marcus Lehto - former artistic director of Bungie, the company that delivered such titles as Halo 3 and Destiny. The conversation also mentioned the PS5 and Lehto seemed to be impressed by the drive that Sony presented. He thought that an SSD with such parameters could make a huge defference.

“It will open up the door for more expansive content that can stream a lot faster. Players won’t be waiting on load screens and we won’t have to hide loading behind cinematics and that kind of thing."

The drive in the new Sony console is to be twice as fast as the one offered by Xbox Series X. As Artistic Director, Lehto was responsible for large areas in Halo and talked about the problems with designing such places, especially on older platforms.

“I am really excited about that because that’s one of the things that’s really hard for us in particular right now: dealing with those old platforms. These platforms have been around for what, seven years? Developing for them is like developing for machinery in the stone age.”

During the presentation of the PS5, Mark Cerny touched upon the topic of hiding loading in games. He said that Sony's new solution will give players freedom and they won't be forced to watch the devs do strange things to hide the fact that the game is still loading. The co-creator of the Halo series agreed completely. He noted that the second nature of game environment designers is to create boundaries.

“I guess one of the benefits of having been in the games industry for so long is that second nature to build environments with some boundaries around it and understanding the memory limits, draw distance limits, shader overdraw… that just comes as second nature."

However, SSD is not all that we mentioned last month. Will Sony be able to do the job and will the console be as efficient as it was announced? All we can do is wait and look for interviews that will elaborate on the subject. Maybe we'll find out more.
