Today, during the PlayStation State of Play presentation, Gearbox Software unveiled a new trailer for the upcoming Borderlands 4 and included a release date. Fans of the long-running franchise will be happy to know that the fourth installment will arrive later this year on September 23, 2025. The new trailer showcased the various new mobility options included in the game, such as gliding, dodging, and even a double jump.

The Borderlands games are known for being over-the-top. A ludicrous number of guns, crude humor, and vibrant cell-shaded visuals are all hallmarks of the franchise. Borderlands 3 was released back in 2019, with the spinoff Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands launching in 2022. Borderlands 4 breaks from the rest of the games in that it takes place on a brand-new planet and introduces new factions of enemies to face off against.

Borderlands 4 looks a lot like previous entries in the series, it does have some new flair, but we will have to wait and see if it improves on the classic tropes of the franchise. At the very least, this should be another fun multiplayer game to jump into with up to four friends.

Perhaps the most interesting note about the Borderlands 4 release date being revealed, is that a few months ago, Take-Two Interactive CEO said that there will be a considerable gap between the releases of Borderlands 4 and Grand Theft Auto 6, easily the most anticipated game of the year. With Borderlands 4 officially set for a September release date, it begs the question of how much of a gap would be considered “considerable.” Is this the first hint that GTA 6 might be pushed into 2026? Or does this mean that it will be released in November or December? It seems unlikely that GTA 6 will launch considerably ahead of Borderlands 4 in September.

The previous trailer for Borderlands 4 showcased at The Game Awards was our first glimpse at gameplay. It featured the new villain, The Timekeeper, and introduced the four new playable Vault Hunters. Of course, classic characters like Claptrap will make a return, but hopefully there is no mention of the Borderlands movie anywhere near this project.
