Bethesda Asked Fallout 76's 21-Million Community About Nomination for Steam Awards 2024. Gamers Said It Was Unfunny Joke
Developers from Bethesda apparently concluded that Fallout 76 deserved the Labor of Love award at the Steam Awards 2024. Gamers, however, seem to have a different opinion.
Yesterday, the autumn sale started on Steam. Traditionally, within its framework, players nominate selected titles for the Steam Awards 2024, this year in 11 categories. One of them is the "Labor of Love" award. Its description reads: "This game has been out for a while. The team is well past the debut of their creative baby, but being the good parents they are, these devs continue to nurture and support their creation. This game, to this day, is still getting new content after all these years."
Last year, gamers treated this category rather mockingly, first nominating Red Dead Redemption 2 and then giving it the win. It was meant to be a slap in the face—or a labor of love gone wrong—for Rockstar, which has largely neglected the online segment of its game, such as Red Dead Online.
However, it's possible that the community will take this category seriously this year. The award could go to even Baldur’s Gate 3 - yesterday Larian Studios provided details of Patch 8 - or No Man’s Sky, which finally has "very positive" reviews on Steam.
Bethesda asks for the Steam Awards 2024 nomination
Bethesda apparently decided that Fallout 76 deserves such an honor. In a press release published yesterday, the developers asked the 21 million players who have been drawn to the post-apocalyptic game in the 6 years since its release to vote for Fallout 76 in the "Labor of Love" category at the Steam Awards 2024.
Will the community fulfill the developers' wish? Based on the comments on Steam, it appears that players are criticizing the devs for a rough launch of the title and the presence of bugs. They are also dismissing the suggestion as an unfunny joke. On the other hand, the Steam post has over 500 "thumbs up" - so maybe Fallout 76 has a chance of becoming a "Labor of Love," even if it turns out to be, like RDR 2, a rotten fallout.
We will only know the final answer to this question on December 31, but the nominations should be announced in mid-December. Then we will already know whether Fallout 76 made it to the final voting at all. By then, specifically on December 3, the game will receive the Gleaming Depths update, which will kick off the 19th season.
