The answer to the question is: yes. The protagonists of the newest Bloober Team game can lose their lives at specific points in the story. Below you will find a detailed description of the situations when the character you control can die, you will learn about the consequences of a potential death and what to do if you don't want to worry about the protagonist's mortality during the game.
When can the main character die?
Although in Layers of Fear (2023) there are not that many situations where you're in immediate danger, they're still there.
You're most likely to die in a direct encounter with the nemesis of the protagonist of a particular act. The classic threats are the specter of the painter's wife from the first act and the shapeless monster from the Actor's Story (you can find the walkthroughs for both acts in our guide).
If you allow the monster to get too close to you, it will immediately lunge at you, killing you instantly. A lamp and a flashlight can help you deal with this, as they will allow you to stun the nightmarish enemy for a while.
You also need to be wary of certain environmental hazards. Dangerous heights or torn pipes with hot steam (occurring primarily in the Actor's Story), death rays and electric gates can also prematurely end our protagonist's life.
What are the consequences of death?
Fortunately, dying in Layers of Fear does not entail any major consequences. The protagonist will wake up in a mysterious room; when you leave it, you will end up at the last checkpoint. From there, you will be able to continue exploring the story and try to face the danger once again.
Safe Mode
If you want to get to know the plot and experience the story of Layers of Fear (2023), but at the same time you don't want to worry too much about keeping your protagonists alive, the Bloober Team studio have prepared a special option for you.
In the Settings menu, in the Gameplay tab you will find an option called Safe Mode. Enabling this option will make it impossible for the enemies to kill you.
If you would like to enable or disable Safe Mode while playing, remember that doing this will make you return to the last checkpoint saved by the game.
