The Forever Winter Description
The Forever Winter is an online shooter with survival horror elements, belonging to the subgenre of so-called extraction shooters. The game, which shows the cruelty of futuristic war in a brutal and terrible way, is the debut project of the American team Fun Dog Studios. This is a company founded by developers whose portfolio includes games from the Mass Effect, Doom, Horizon and The Witcher series.
Plot
The Forever Winter presents us with a grim vision of the future, in which ecological disasters and out-of-control technological progress have led to the outbreak of a great war between two military superpowers. After forty years, the conflict only intensifies, and both sides spare no effort to defeat their enemies, sending ruthless automatons controlled by Artificial Intelligence and gigantic war machines into battle. They also use tactical nuclear warheads and hybrids of humans and machines.
We do not side with any of the superpowers in the game. Instead, we take on the role of survivors who have to fight for survival every day. Although initially our presence is almost unnoticed by those fighting with each other, over time the situation begins to change.
Mechanics
In The Forever Winter, we watch the action from a third-person perspective (TPP). The game takes place on battlefields, and during it our primary goal is to collect as much loot as possible and reach the evacuation point in one piece.
The situation is complicated by the fact that the locations are dominated by the military forces. We may encounter hostile soldiers, tanks, as well as gigantic war machines, like 13-story guns or 40-meter mechs. Enemies have their own goals to achieve and coordinate their actions, organizing themselves into groups and units. All this means that the situation on the front is constantly changing, which affects the appearance of individual arenas and the location of the troops fighting there.
We can try to fight enemies (the game offers a wide range of firearms and melee weapons, which we can upgrade and modify), but it is not a good idea, especially in the early stages of the game. It is better to act quietly, sneaking behind the backs of adversaries, not drawing their attention to ourselves, escaping if necessary, and also closely cooperating with the other members of the team.
As we acquire better and better equipment, we gradually become a thorn in the side of military powers, which begin to perceive us as a kind of third party to the conflict. Because of this, over time we are left with nothing else but to reach for weapons more and more often.
Game modes
The Forever Winter only allows for cooperative gameplay over the Internet.
