Prepared by Insomniac Games, the third installment of the series enables us to once again take on the role of the brave purple dragon Spyro and save the world. The game retains the characteristic elements of the previous parts, such as colorful graphics and open worlds with numerous challenges, but also adds novelties, including several playable heroes with different skills.
Story
Spyro and his brethren celebrate the Year of the Dragon, an event that takes place once every twenty years. The celebration is disturbed by the emergence of the masked hare Bianca, who, together with an army of rhinoceros-like creatures, steals dragon eggs and takes them to her leader, the Evil Witch. Spyro and his friend, Sparx the dragonfly, are sent to recover them. Soon they find themselves in an unknown world in which dragons used to live and which is now under the rule of a cruel overlord. The purple hero joins a group of rebels who want to liberate the land. Over time, he learns about the true motives of the Witch and her evil plans for all dragons.
Mechanics
Spyro: Year of Dragon retains the distinctive elements of the series - it is still a 3D platform gane, where the players explore open worlds, perform missions for NPCs, take part in numerous mini-games, pick up collectibles and face arcade and logic challenges. New element in the third part of the cycle are other playable characters. In addition to the eponymous dragon, we can explore the maps as Shiela the kangaroo, Byrd the pengui, a yeti called Bentley or the monkey named Agent 9. Each of them has their own skills, useful in specific situations, as well as levels designed for itself.
The characters have several health points, symbolized by the color of Sparx. As in the previous game, they can also deal with enemies through a variety of attacks. During their adventure, the heroes visit 37 maps, collecting stolen dragon eggs, jewels and other goods. Access to some of them is only unlocked over time, with the acquisition of specific abilities or the rescue of certain allies, which has an additional impact on the length of the game.
Technical aspects
Insomniac Games' work retains the character of the entire series, offering cartoonish style, ubiquitous humour and colorful setting. A former member of The Police, Stewart Copeland, is once again responsible for the soundtrack.
