Spyro Video Game Series
A series of action platform games aimed primarily at younger players. The series was created by the Insomniac Games studio. The brand is owned by Activision Blizzard, and such development studios as Toys For Bob, n-Space, Vicarious Visions and Beenox are involved in its development.
The origins of the series Spyro are associated with the PlayStation console and the 1998 game released for that hardware platform Spyro the Dragon. It initiated the first generation of games about the adventures of the purple dragon, including such titles as: Spyro the Dragon (1998), Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! (1999), Spyro: Year of the Dragon (2000), Spyro: Enter the Dragonfly (2002), Spyro: Adventure (2003) , Spyro: A Hero's Tail (2004) i Spyro: Shadow Legacy (2005). In 2006, the publisher decided to launch a new sub-cycle The Legend of Spyro, a trilogy consisting of: The Legend of Spyro: A New Beginning (2006), The Legend of Spyro: The Eternal Night (2007) and The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon (2008). A new chapter in the history of the series opened with the game released in 2011 Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, which lived to see a sequel in the form of Skylanders: Giants (2012) i Skylanders: Swap Force (2013). The brand is also complemented by numerous spin-offs, including Spyro: Season of Ice (2001), Spyro Orange: The Cortex Conspiracy (2004) i Skylanders: Spyro's Universe (2011). Activision Blizzard decided to bring the purple dragon back to life and a remake of the games was released in 2018: Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon titled Spyro: Reignited Trilogy. The project was handled by Toys for Bob studio, which, using a completely new graphics engine, practically recreated the productions released in 1998-2000 from scratch. In addition to refreshed visuals, the developers also redesigned the controls, so that the latest installment of the series Spyro supports movement with two analog knobs.
The plot of the games in the series Spyro is set mainly in the magical world of dragons (The Dragon Realm). Players follow the adventures of a small, purple dragon Spyro and his faithful friend - the dragonfly Sparx. Typically, the heroes must save the land and its inhabitants from the scheming of villains, among whom appear Gnasty Gnorc, the sorcerer Ripto and the fallen dragon Red.
The gameplay combines elements of an action game and a 3D platformer. While fighting opponents or solving logic puzzles, the protagonist can use dragon abilities such as breathing fire or flying. Sparx acts not only as a companion, but also as a health indicator for Spyro, and by consuming butterflies he can boost his friend's vitality.
From the very beginning, the series Spyro attracts attention with its attractive visuals. Intense colors, sympathetic character models and humorous animations are a clear nod to younger players. Music in the games of the series is thanks to composers such as Stewart Copeland (drummer of the band The Police), Rebecca Kneubuhl, Gabriel Mann and Hans Zimmer.
Spyro is among the most profitable brands in Activision Blizzard's portfolio. This is especially true of the popularity of the sub-cycle of Skylanders, which in the 15 months since its market debut reached revenue in excess of $1 billion (refers to games Skylanders: Spyro's Adventures i Skylanders: Giants and the figures that come with them).
An estimated 20 million copies of the games in the series have been shipped to gamers Spyro.
