Devil May Cry Video Game Series
A series of action games with gameplay focused on spectacular combat sequences, considered to be some of the best slashers on the market. Devil May Cry ranks among the most important brands in the publishing portfolio of Japanese company Capcom.
The originator of the series, originally intended to be a spin-off of the series Resident Evilseries, is Hideki Kamiya. The project Devil May Cry was eventually transformed into an entirely new brand, which debuted in 2001 on the PlayStation 2 console. Part two was released on the same platform two years later, and in 2019 it lived to see a release on the Nintendo Switch. The third installment, titled Devil May Cry 3: Dante's Awakening, premiered in 2005 on PS2, in 2006 on PC, and in 2020 on Switch. After the release of Devil May Cry 4 (2008, with versions for PC, PS3 and Xbox 360), Capcom executives decided that a major overhaul was needed. Its effect turned out to be a reboot of the series in 2013, when it premiered DmC: Devil May Cry by Ninja Theory studio. The wait for the title was diversified in 2012 with the following. Devil May Cry HD Collection, a release containing remastered versions of the first three installments (which was also released in 2018 for PC, PS4 and Xbox One). The warm reception of the reboot of the series led to the release on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One two years later. DmC: Devil May Cry Definitive Edition, containing all the previously released add-ons to DmC: Devil May Cry along with several items prepared specifically for this version (including Turbo mode). In the same year, players had the opportunity to purchase Devil May Cry 4: Special Edition, an enhanced version of the fourth installment of the series, for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. In addition to improved graphics, the developers were also tempted to provide three new playable characters. The full-fledged fifth installment of the series, Devil May Cry 5, was released in 2019 for PC and eighth-generation consoles. Its plot was set just after the events of Devil May Cry 4, and we received three playable characters at our disposal. The developers of the first installments were responsible for creating the title, with Hideaki Itsuno (Dragon's Dogma) in the lead.
The main theme of the plot of the games in the series Devil May Cry is the revenge that the main character - Dante - wants to carry out on the demons guilty of the death of his mother and the corrupting of his brother. In order to achieve his goal, the hero must make his way through hordes of enemies and defeat successive bosses standing in his way. A change in the storyline so far came with the release of the fourth installment of the series. The player assumes the role of a new character, Nero, who witnesses the murder of his brothers by the protagonist of the previous installments. So the leitmotif remains revenge, but shown from a different perspective. Devil May Cry 5 presents the further fate of Dante and Nero, as well as a new character known as V. Men once again face hordes of demons and other monsters attacking our world.
So far, the gameplay has been focused only on solo play, but in the latest installment of the series for the first time appears a cooperative multiplayer mode, which focuses on clashes with numerous opponents. The challenge for the player is not only to defeat enemies in the shortest possible time, but also to present an impressive fighting style, which is subject to evaluation after completing each stage.
The initial four installments of the series used successive versions of the proprietary engine - DMC. With the change of the development team, it was also decided to change the technology. W DmC: Devil May Cry thus used the popular Unreal Engine 3 (also used in an earlier game by Ninja Theory studio - Enslaved: Odyssey to the West). In turn Devil May Cry 5 uses the RE Engine, an engine developed specifically for Resident Evil 7: Biohazard, allowing photorealistic graphics to be implemented into the game.
To popularize the brand Devil May Cry outside the world of video games has been helped by, among other things, two novels by Shinya Goikeda, a comic book series by Dreamwave Productions and a 12-episode anime series. In 2011, Screen Gems announced the start of work on a film adaptation, but since then little information has been released about it.

The plot in Devil May Cry 4 concentrates on the adventures of a completely new protagonist – Nero, a member of the Holy Knights. One day he witnesses a slaughter on his brothers carried out by Dante – the character known from the previous parts – and swears to avenge them. However, it turns out there is a second bottom to the whole thing and eventually both heroes join forces in order to face the common enemy. Mechanics-wise, the game hasn't changed significantly from the previous installments of the series and concentrates on dynamic fights with groups of opponents and difficult bosses. Depending on personal preferences, the style can emphasize powerful melee attacks (Swordmaster), defense & counterattacks (Royal Guard), firearms (Gunslinger), or mobility (Trickster). Other gameplay elements remain the same – the player will face numerous opponents at once and participate in dynamic action sequences while accompanied by a heavy metal soundtrack.

A continuation of the third-person perspective hack and slash released by Capcom in 2001, which told a story of Dante – a half-demon and destroyer of evil. In this part, his adventures combine with the story of a warrior called Lucia – they both intend to stop a businessman named Arius from resurrecting a demon and acquiring superhuman powers that would make him rule the world. Mechanics remain almost unchanged, but there is a change of scenery – instead of the dark, gothic style, Devil May Cry 2 features contemporary cities with skyscrapers and mazes of streets. Gameplay is divided into two independent campaigns in which you can play with both heroes. Each of them offers a slightly different style – in contrast to the strong, but slow Dante, Lucia is fast and nimble. Both characters have the ability to transform into a demon, which is the special power known from the first installment.

Developed by an internal development studio of Capcom, a third-person perspective action game emphasizing its dynamic, very spectacular combat system. Originally, the game was intended to be another installment in the Resident Evil franchise. The plot of Devil May Cry is set in a modern setting on the fictional Mallet Island. During gameplay you follow a dark warrior named Dante – half-man, half-demon – who must face the ruler of the underground world Mundus, who was defeated thousands of years before by Dante’s father. The action revolves around skillful elimination of waves of enemies with the use of gradually-upgraded tools of destruction. Each stage is rated on a special scale that examines your time, fighting style, items used, and damage received. Interestingly, Dante can transform into a demon for a short period of time, during which, surrounded by a special aura, he spreads destruction even more vigorously.
