Smite Video Game Series
MOBA type production series, launched in 2014. Over the development of the series Smite is overseen by Hi-Rez Studios, a development team founded in 2005, whose portfolio also includes such projects as. Global Agenda, Tribes: Ascend and Paladins.
In games under the banner of Smite we impersonate a variety of deities. Among the available characters were gods and goddesses from Greek, Egyptian, Norse and Chinese myths. In addition, Hindu deities, among others, were put at the disposal of the players, which in June 2012, when the first part of the series was in the closed beta-testing phase, aroused controversy and met with opposition from Hindu religious leaders.
The pillar of the gameplay are dynamic skirmishes, in which two teams try to reach the enemy base and slaughter the Minotaur inside before their opponents do. In the fight for victory we are assisted by both other players and minor units, called minions. Unlike in most other titles of this type, the action here is viewed from a third-person perspective (TPP), while the controls are taken from action games.
The first part of the series, namely Smite, debuted on personal computers in 2014. The production was distributed in a free-to-play model and quickly achieved great artistic and commercial success. Forging iron while hot, the developers proceeded to develop it, and also prepared its console versions. As a result, by April 2020 in Smite played more than 40 million players. In addition, over time, the production lived to see an official world championship (Smite World Championship), as well as its own e-sports league (Smite Pro League).
The second installment of the series, namely Smite 2, was announced in January 2024. Despite the fact that the title was not a continuation in the full sense of the word, but a much improved version of the original, it failed to ensure compatibility with the "one". The reason for this was the developers' switch to Unreal Engine 5, which forced them to prepare all the content from scratch. The game was developed for PC and consoles, provided cross-platform functionality and, like its predecessor, was available for free (with optional micropayments).
Over the years, the brand Smite has also received spin-offs. The first of these was a game released in 2018. Hand of the Gods: Smite Tactics, which is a turn-based battle strategy with card game elements. The second was Smite Blitz, which is a tactical RPG developed for mobile devices. Like the main parts of the series, both productions were distributed in a free-to-play model with micropayments. In addition, in January 2017 it was announced Smite Rivals, a networked "battle royale" with MOBA and card production elements, which was to hit mobile devices and personal computers. Nevertheless, already in March it was reported that work on it had been halted, among other things due to the unsatisfactory quality of the project.
