developer: id Software / Nightdive Studios publisher: Bethesda Softworks
Quake is a remastered version of the cult FPS, released in 1996. The game was developed by the authors of the original, id Software, and Nightdive Studios, a team specializing in refreshing old hits. The MachineGames team, which has several games under the Wolfenstein banner in its portfolio, prepared two expansions for the needs of the described project, namely Dimenions of the Past and Dimension of the Machine. Game was released by Bethesda Softworks, the company taking care of the brand.
Plot
The action of Quake is set in the future. Main hero of this production is Ranger - fearless and armed to the teeth soldier. After governmental experiments with interdimensional travel brought to Earth a deadly danger in the form of ancient evil, the protagonist has no choice but to take part in Operation Counterstrike and find four ancient runes. Only they will allow him to deal with the threat before it is too late.
Mechanics
In comparison to the original, the game mechanics of Quake remained untouched. We observe the action from the first person perspective (FPP). While completing missions, we wander through various locations and face hordes of enemies. Authors give us eight types of weapons, among which we can find an axe, machine gun or rocket launcher. During fast-paced shootouts we have to be constantly on the move; wounds sustained on the battlefield are healed with the help of first aid kits scattered around the levels.
The pillar of this game is the story campaign, which is made up of missions set in four dimensions. During the game we visit military bases, medieval castles, gloomy dungeons and gothic cathedrals. Moreover, in the Dimension of the Machine we find ourselves in a labyrinth, where a steel and lava core is hidden. Our task is to find it and open a portal, which will lead us straight into the arms of yet another danger threatening humanity.
Game modes
We can complete the Quake game's story campaign alone or in co-op mode for up to four players. In addition, there is a multiplayer mode waiting to be tested here, where up to four people can fight in split-screen, and eight over the Internet.
Technical aspects
In comparison to the original, Quake stands out thanks to slightly refreshed graphics. The game was adapted to the specifics of widescreen displays and runs in 4K resolution. In addition, models have been improved, lighting has been tweaked, and anti-aliasing and depth of field have been added.
