SPRAWL 96 brings the mechanics of Steam's revered FPS to classic Quake
The developers of the highly-acclaimed boomer shooter SPRAWL have developed their own modification to the first installment of the Quake series, porting mechanisms from their game to it.
Recent years have seen an explosion of so-called boomer shooters, which arefirst-person shooters referencing productions of the genre released in the 1990s. One of the best games of this type is SPRAWL, released last year, as evidenced by the fact that on Steam this title has 87% positive reviews. For the game's authors, one of the main sources of inspiration was the first part of Quake. Now they have honored this id Software’s classic by creating a modification for it, recreating many elements from their own production.
The mod is titled SPRAWL 96, as it shows how the game might have looked if it had been released 28 years ago. The project swaps out most of the weapons and enemies. The acrobatic movement system from SPRAWL has also been implemented. The whole thing works perfectly in action and provides a ton of fun.
We can play with all of these changes on the original Quake maps. The mod also works with many fan-made maps, as long as they work with the basic version of the game (this ensures that they don't make changes that would be in conflict with what SPRAWL 96 does).
Developing such a mod was a return to roots for the authors. The first prototype version of SPRAWL was built on Darkplaces, which is a fan-made enhanced version of the Quake engine. As the authors say, their development of the game would have been impossible had they not been able to rely on the experience and achievements of the Quake fan community. The developers themselves met on the Discord dedicated to id Software production.
