Crash Video Game Series
A series of 3D platformers starring a lovable striped dachshund. The series was created by the Naughty Dog studio, but over the years has passed into the hands of many developers (including Radical Entertainment or High Impact Games). Currently, the rights to the brand are held by Activision-Blizzard, and King (the creators of Candy Crush).
The genesis of the series is connected with the agreement between Naughty Dog and Universal Game Studios. Its subject was three new projects, among which there was an idea for an action platform game. Sony Computer Entertainment, looking for exclusive titles for the PlayStation console, was interested in the production. The first installment of the series, Crash Bandicoot, debuted in 1996 and was very well received by gamers. This encouraged the developers to begin work on a sequel - Crash Bandicoot 2: Cortex Strikes Back, released in 1997. A year later, the development of the main branch of the brand came to a halt with the release of Crash Bandicoot 3: Warped. Instead of more full-fledged installments, players began to receive numerous side titles and spin-offs, including. Crash Team Racing or Crash Bash. Publishers quickly abandoned exclusivity for Sony products and since Crash Bandicoot: The Wrath of Cortex from 2001, subsequent installments of the series appeared on hardware from different publishers. It wasn't until 2020 that the sequel to "three" was released on PS4 and Xbox One, Crash Bandicoot 4: It's About Time, excluding all side-scrollers from the canon.
The title character of the games in the series is a striped dachshund named Crash. The sympathetic animal with somewhat anthropomorphic appearance was created as the result of an experiment by Dr. Neo Corteks, who holds the role of anti-hero in this universe. In most games, the action takes place on the fictional Wumpa Islands supposedly located south of Australia, and the plot revolves around the struggle with Doctor Corteks and his allies. Controlling the actions of Crash, the player must thwart the plans of the mad scientist, eager to possess power over the world.
Depending on the title, the gameplay is based on one of two schemes. The first is typically arcade platformers, in which we must overcome levels riddled with traps and enemies, and the second is racing games, involving competition with other characters from the universe. Characteristic elements of the game include Wumpa fruit, allowing the hero to regenerate his health, and Aku-Aku masks, making Crash immune to blows (but not to falling into an abyss).
According to reports from Activision, the games in the series Crash Bandicoot have achieved total sales of more than 50 million copies, with as many as 6.8 million gamers buying the first part of the series and the omnibus edition of the first three installments, Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy (2017), more than 10 million.
