Braveland Pirate
Strategy
September 29, 2015
The third installment in a series of popular turn-based strategies enriched with RPG elements. The franchise has been developed by Tortuga Team - an independent Russian studio. This time, the player takes on the role of Captain Jim, whose goal is to find an ancient treasure. Making this happen often gets interrupted by other pirates the protagonist has to deal with, as well as sea monsters and hordes of undead. A story campaign is at the core of the game and the player is required to explore the game world, complete various story-based missions and side quests, recruit crew-members and fight the enemies encountered. In comparison to the previous installments, Braveland Pirate introduces an important change in the mechanics - the protagonist now takes part in fights directly, joining his team of companions having different weapons and abilities. Significantly, the range of combat abilities available gets wider alongside player progression; as for the battles as such, those take place both in at sea and on land. Changing the setting did not influence the art style of the visuals however - these are still both cartoonish and eye-pleasing.

After he accidentally acquires the power to stretch his body like rubber, which helps the protagonist achieve his dreams. The experience focuses on battling enemies, and Luffy can be accompanied by up to five team-members. Although combat is turn-based, the game features a significant portion of arcade elements - those require the player to go through simple QTEs and combine attacks into deadly combos. Character development and equipping one's team-members with new skills constitute another large part of the experience.

Abandon Ship offers a system of tactical, real time battles that require usage of various maneuvers and skillful crew management. Players’ character and their crew gain experience, and the ship can also be upgraded. However, it is impossible to recover a sunken ship, meaning that a captain of such a vessel must build his position from scratch, of course if he survives – otherwise the players must start from the beginning. Abandon Ship uses an interesting visual style, resembling oil paintings of the 19th century.
