A continuation of The Pirate: Caribbean Hunt – a popular action game with strategy elements. Both installments have been developed by the independent Home Net Games established by Miroslaw Dymek – the creator of such best-selling series as Polanie, Earth, and Two Worlds. Initially, the game described herein has been published on mobile devices (the game is based on a free-to-play business model with optional microtransactions), however, after some time the developers decided to release its PC / Windows version.
Plot
The action of the PC, AND and iOS release of The Pirate: Plague of the Dead is set on the Caribbean islands controlled by the pirates. The main protagonist of the story is John Rackham – the only survivor of the slaughter orchestrated by the Grand Inquisitor. Seeking his revenge, John turned to voodoo practices in order to resurrect legendary pirates such as Anne Bonny, Charles Vane, and Blackbeard himself. Together with the pirates brought from the dead, the main protagonist wants to deal with his arch enemy once and for all.
Mechanics
The Pirate: Plague of the Dead features a vast open world a player is free to explore with one of over a dozen available ships. The game delivers realistic and straightforward controls – on his journey, a player has to observe not only the wind direction and velocity, but also use this information to choose the appropriate type of sails. To top it all, the game delivers a full day and night cycle as well as changing weather conditions.
The game is fueled by campaign missions that lead a player through consecutive parts of the story. In between these missions, one can turn to other activities such as trading, searching for treasures and smugglers’ hideouts, and even conquering cities. The income generated this way fills the treasury allowing for expanding and improving the fleet controlled by a player.
Since the game described herein offers an option to participate in a real pirate adventure, the gameplay revolves around real time naval battles, during which one can ram into the enemy vessels, shoot the cannons at particular parts of hostile ships affecting the maneuverability of the damaged unit.
Also important are the unique skills featured by captains, who fight for the player. Depending on the character, he can throw barrels with gunpowder around the ship and lure the enemies towards them, as well as summon the mythical Kraken. One should not forget about the passive skills of the pirates themselves, as they can improve the ships’ statistics as well as increase the amount of looted gold.
Technical aspects
The PC, AND and iOS release of The Pirate: Plague of the Dead delivers high-quality 3D visuals. One is bound the effects surrounding the firefights, realistic water animations, and ships’ models.
