AND

Braveland Pirate for PC, AND and iOS is the third installment in the series of acclaimed, turn-based strategy games Braveland – the franchise has its devoted fans among users of mobile devices (Android, iOS), but also gained popularity within the ranks of the PC players. The trilogy was created by Tortuga Team (a Russian developer) and its final third part unexpectedly delivers the players with this pirate adventure.

Plot

In Braveland Pirate for PC, AND and iOS, the player assumes the role of Captain Jim, who travels to the Free Islands archipelago in order to find an ancient treasure. The protagonist can count on his crew that gains experience, as well as new members as the course of events unfolds. The hunt for great treasures can get interrupted by other pirates who roam the same waters, but also hordes of the undead, as well as legendary sea-monsters.

Mechanics

In terms of the mechanics, Braveland Pirate for PC, AND and iOS does not introduce any revolutionary changes, thus the gameplay formula present here again resembles a simplified version of the gameplay patterns the Heroes of Might & Magic series have been popular for. The player traverses the game world, completes story-based missions and talks to NPCs, but turn-based battles set in small arenas made of hexes are at the core of the experience (battles in open seas were also included). Braveland Pirate introduces a few novelties as well – above all, the protagonist joins the actual action, being able to support their team directly. Captain Jim's subordinates differ in their fighting styles, skills and statistics. The protagonist of course, has a pirate ship, which allows him to travel between different islands freely. Furthermore, the game features a well-balanced development system that encompasses both the crew-members and the captain himself. The protagonist has three separate skill trees for the player to make use of.

Game modes

As usual in the series, Braveland Pirate for PC, AND and iOS offers exclusively a single-player campaign, which this time, delivers over seven hours of play. During the campaign, the player recruits subsequent crew-members, gains access to special pirate abilities for Captain Jim, but also searches for treasures and ancient artifacts.

Technical aspects

Changing the setting and atmosphere present brought a refreshment to the franchise and allowed the creators themselves to design different locations. Despite that however, little has changed as far as the graphics are concerned and the events are once again presented to the player in two dimensions. The game offers colorful, hand-drawn visuals with a cartoonish art style applied. The situation is similar when it comes to the soundtrack – although Braveland Pirate is set in completely different realities, the audio still sounds somewhat folkish.
