Mechanics

The game in Pirates Outlaws starts with choosing the main character. The authors give us a wide range of characters, each with different special abilities and an individual set of starter cards. We still have nothing left to do but to start a proper game.

The main variant of the game is Navigate, which is divided into chapters crowned by fighting the mighty boss. During the struggle, we sail aboard our ship on procedurally generated maps and visit other islands. We will find a variety of random events, taverns, stores and enemies to defeat. Clashes with adversaries take place in turn-based mode. We observe the action from the side, and playing the next cards, we attack the enemies, defend or strengthen the protagonist before the next turn. Interestingly, unlike most other games of this type, to perform distance attacks we need ammunition (which requires playing a specific card). In addition, as we progress, we gain powerful relics providing us with a variety of fixed bonuses; it is worth remembering that each character can use seven such items at the same time.

However, the pirate life is not just fighting. In the above mentioned taverns, our student can spend some coins to repair his ship (recovering action points needed to travel on the islands) or to regenerate the impaired forces and earn some money by selling unnecessary equipment. In the shops we can buy new cards (or improve existing ones) and relics.

Game modes

In addition to Navigate mode, the Arena mode is waiting to be tested in the Pirates Outlaws, where we face more and more powerful enemies; we are also growing in strength, as we are winning better cards and relics after each fight.
